Lloyd to sign with Panthers today

Well, in my defense, I never saw or heard that Carter left the game with back spasms, but I did notice that no kicks went close to the goal line and by the second half I saw #4 on kickoff detail.

I really hate the fact that Kasay can't do the kickoffs, but he doesn't have that ability. The truth is that opponent's Special Teams will plan for the short kickoff. It's not unreasonable to imagine the average starting field position on kickoffs jumping into the 30+ yard range with Kasay averaging 57 yards per attempt. That is a huge field position allowance.

The news that Lloyd is back on the squad could be a significant upgrade, even if he performs at 2009 levels.

Whether folks like it or not, field position/ball control/time of possession is a huge part of the game plan and success of this team. The moment any of these start to slide, we start to look like crap. Not that it takes a rocket scientist to determine that turnovers are killers, but ball control directly impacts the other two. We already have a solid (might I suggest "elite"?) punter. The Kickoffs are CRUCIAL, IMO. The uncertainty on offense only makes it even more important.

What other roster spot would you rather have open?

Well if Sutton is healthy, he will regain his roster spot. The D line and secondary need help. But I would like to see Gettis get a shot. In other words, if Lloyd was so great, he wouldn't have been cut the first time or by the Vikes.

All the players you mentioned would play very few snaps if active. And even then, its highy dobutful they would make any noticable impact.

Lloyd on the other hand (if up to par) has a chance to make an solid impact every time he steps on the field.

He's been cut by 3 teams in 2 years, we had 5 kick offs for 16.8 yds per return and a long of 22. Just in my opinion a guy who can get open and catch or a extra DB makes more sense than a "journeyman" kicker, who BTW has no hangtime.

The problem if Gettis even played, he would be a fourth string, rookie WR, in a running offence. Jarret only caught two balls last game, and he's the other starter. No point IMO.

While Im hestiant towards Lloyd based on his preseason, he still was a top KOS last year, and will contriubute more then any third string WR/DB could as of right now.

IMO, the #2 WR spot is still up for grabs... Gettis deserves a shot. Having a KOS is a luxury that this team can't afford. If we can't score, then he won't be kicking. However I respect your opinion and hope it works out.

But its not costing anything we can't afford. If Gettis didnt get third WR at the start of the season, then its highly doubtful he''ll number two this year. He just isnt ready. Even if he did somehow get a start, he's a rookie WR, a raw one at that, he would not make any decent consistent impact.

I agree Lloyd's impact depnds on the offence scoring, But our offence will not score more frequently with Gettis/whoever.

He was cut once. We just let him walk because we didn't want to pay him a rfa tender. Minnesota didn't need him because Longwell was doing well on kickoffs.
