My personal thoughts on the Giants game

Since yesterday was a big whine-a-thon about the bad decisions Moore and Davidson made, I held off until today. Here is what I took away from yesterday, both positives and negatives. And if it has already been said, oh well. Just don't want to have to jump 5 threads to get my point across.

Positives:

- We didn't do terrible at all against the run. Sure, we gave up a couple big runs, but overall we did well. Take away their two longest runs (the one by Bradshaw and Jacobs biggest) and they didn't do anything. Period. Our front 7 may be as good as they seemed to be all preseason.

- Pass rush wasn't TERRIBLE. Not great throughout the whole game, but definitely no worse than last year. I feel like if we would stop just blitzing straight up the middle, stunt our d-line a little more, then we could generate more pressure.

- Special teams has absolutely improved. Maybe it was a one-hit wonder. Maybe not. Apart from the terrible snap by Jansen, I was pleased with the overall play.

Negatives:

- Davidson. Need I say anything at all? 24 rushes the whole game. 3 were by people not named Williams or Stewart.

- Moore's decision making was far from great. The good news is, it is fixable. I think it is something that can be handled relatively quickly, as long as he learns from it.

- OL...again, need I say anything? Williams didn't have a lot of room to work with other than his big run. Outside of that 1 run, the OL was pathetic. Pass pro had its times of greatness, but Moore still found a way to screw up. Again, fixable. Just a matter of IF they will fix it.

- Coverage in the secondary NEEDS to get better. Safeties need to know they are the over the top help. I've talked to some people and they act like the big pass plays are on the corners. Cover 2 scheme says safeties have the deep ball and they can't give up the posts. Well, posts weren't the problem, so what does that say? Can't let speed get over the top. I'd take a 15 yard post over the middle over a 40 yard go route, as would all of you, I'm sure. Gamble and Marshall played flat to hook, like you're taught. That being said, Marshall got burned 1 on 1 and couldn't handle Nicks.

Those are the things that popped out to me. 1 of the biggest things for defenses is giving up the big play. We gave up at least 6 I can think of off the top of my head. We sure that aspect up, our defense is good. They got the turnovers for the offense, but the offense couldn't capitalize. The scoreboard says less about the defense, more about the offense. Don't leave the defense on the field the whole game.

Now that I have this all out, you will not hear me say a thing about this game. Time to focus on next Sunday. Keep it in perspective, the Colts, Cowboys, and Vikings all lost. There are plenty of good teams that lost in week 1. Quit freaking out.

I think if our line turns up the pressure, the safeties are gonna look a whole lot better.

I agree. I just don't think it is that they are not capable. More times than not, they are just attacking the outside shoulder of their inside man and getting locked up. You look at the teams who get big sack numbers, they are stunting. You give any decent QB as much time as Eli had yesterday, you will get picked apart. We have a good secondary, they just need to step up and learn their responsibilities more. And that falls on the secondary veteran, Gamble. He has to keep them straight throughout the week at practice.
