XBOX or PS3

i have owned both systems. xbox, i think, is a slightly more powerful machine, but i prefer the ps3 because it has a better selection of games.

i actually think the ps3 is a more powerful system, it's just that it is hard as hell to code for so all the ports you see end up looking better on xbox.

ps3 originals though look significantly better than 360 games.

Both.

If i had to choose, I'd probably pick the PS3. The exclusive games are poo tons better than the games exclusive to the Xbox.

People like to say that the ps3 online community is lacking, but I disagree. The only thing missing from ps3 online is party chat.

PS3 has a wide selection of fun games that are highly customizable (mod nation, joe danger, etc)

But IMO, they aren't enough to get me more into the PS3. I've had one since it came out and I still rarely touch it. I use it for watching movies (blu ray, dvd or netflix - movies somehow always look better on PS3) I don't like the constant updates. I have a 30 mbps connection and the updates still take hours to download, both wired and wireless. PS3 hypes its 1080p capabilities, but in all honesty, about the only time you're seeing 1080p is the screen when you cut it on or watching movies. For netflix streaming, you still need a disk. Lose the disk, gotta stream from elsewhere...

...like on the 360, where you don't need a disk. But you can't search for movies on 360 like you can on PS3. I like fighting games and the 360's controller are horrible, but not as bad as the original Xbox controller was. for fighting games.

Sports games usually go either way - EA usually sneaks little exclusive features into each version and only does 1080p on 360 (from what I've seen).

Shooters are definitely better on the 360, but the PS3 is catching up.

If you play online, you'll see that you can usually pwn the competition on PS3 and then get pwned on 360. I've noticed that on just about every online game that I've played on both systems.

Your mileage may vary.

As someone who has owned both I can definitely throw at least 2 cents in.

Just doing a few pros for each. Both have their cons, but meh, here goes...

XBOX 360

- XBOX Live. Simply the best. Yes PSN is free, you get what you pay do (or don't) pay for on both. Party Chat being my favorite online gaming thing ever. PSN doesn't have voice chat for anything but in-game.

- Exclusives. Forza, Gears Of War, Left 4 Dead, Halo

PS3

- Blu-Ray, if you are a movie lover...Blu-Ray is the end all be all in movies. No bones about it.

- Exclusives. Gran Turismo (If it ever actually comes out), MLB The Show, ModNation, LBP I for one like the Exclusives better on the PS3. I am a huge MLB The Show nut.

Now more than ever the systems both have someone to pull you one way or another, 2 years ago a 360 was the obvious choice, but now with PS3 getting more exclusives out there that are really good...it is a tough choice. You really can't go wrong with either console these days, but if you enjoy playing with friends all the time...get a 360, that is what it is meant for. If you play by yourself or don't know or play with friends online then a PS3 is the one you want.

i have both. i probably play them an equal amount. i think the xbox is better for online gaming like you say you want to do. and now they have a wireless built into the system. ps3 is a bluray player as well which is good.

in terms of breaking, my xbox RRODd after about a year and a half of use. my ps3 is still pretty new (plus idk if they break or not).

just to update this. my ps3 came down with the blinking red light of death last night. FML.

I am on my second ps3. I had the same problem. I didn't get an extended warranty so i had to shell out $150 for a refurb.

Oddly enough, I am still on my first 360.

I think the best way to decide is to go with whatever your friends play. If you have friends. Just sayin....;)
