The "Jeff Davidson sucks" mantra.

First of all, is Davidson great? The answer is no. With that one out of the way lets proceed.

Does he suck? The answer is also no and here is why.

Points scored which is the only stat that matters.

Last year of Henning- 2006 ranked 27th

Best year under Henning 2005- ranked 8th

First year of Davidson- 2007- 26th

2nd year of Davidson- 2008- 7th

3rd year of Davidson- 2009- 21st

4th year of Davidson- 2010 after 1 game- 13th

So the fact is that our offense is not great but about the same as it was under Henning.

Do we have more talent under Davidson? Linewise- not really, too many injuries and shuffling around under Davidson.

Running backs? Definitely

QB- you could argue that outside of the games Moore played and 2008 when Jake was up and down, you could argue the quarterback play was worse not better.

Wide receiver- Up and down really. But you definitely wouldn't say that our group is talented at that spot right now.

TEs- better talent than Henning had but still seems underutilized.

I think we saw Davidson's offense in 2008. In 2007 we had a tremendous amount of quarterback turnover and the offense was pared down on purpose. In 2008 we saw what Davidson could do in the running game and passing game.

In 2009 we saw it again the last 5 games when Moore was in there. Before that Jake was too inconsistent for a whole bunch of conclusions to be made.

Was playcalling terrible against New York?? Should we have run more?? Sure folks point to Williams and say he got 62 yards on 16 carries but if you account for the 29 yard scamper the other 15 times he gained 33 or 2 yards a carry. All day we had 24 attempts rushing. Should we have done more? It netted us 2 first downs- one on William's run and one on Moore's scramble. That's it.

Why didn't we run from the goal line when we had first and goal? Because we got stuffed running the ball earlier in the game on 2nd and 3rd and short. And in general we got stuffed most of the day running the ball.

So for better or worse we threw the ball. And if you take the stupid picks away, we were competitive all day until the 4th quarter. It really wasn't Davidson's fault and while he is not a great coordinator, he doesn't suck either.

When you bring Henning up, it sounds like you're making an argument for Davidson by saying, in effect, "Davidson is better than Henning, and Henning was good enough, so Davidson must be good enough." I don't think that any position which rests on how good Henning was while he was here will win you a lot of points on this board. :)

It's my personal opinion that Henning is better, but that doesn't mean either OC is worth a damn. We can go back and forth on who had more talent all day long, but that's not going to win any real points. I have yet to see Davidson do anything extreme, as Henning did with the Wildcat, but he hasn't had the time here Henning did and he just may not be as obvious about it as Henning was. The bottom line is that Henning doesn't matter. He's not here, Davidson is, and he's the one who we're discussing.

What you've listed in your defense of Davidson is the points scored stat, and then you explained why it doesn't matter in his first year and for the first half of his third. When put that way, anyone can be made into a star. And if he is just a victim or circumstance, why not go back to Cleveland, where he averaged 15 points per game? Or is he just good when the stars align properly?

I don't think that Davidson has ever had a high powered offense, save his second year in Carolina. And in that year, he called a lot more runs than he's called since, and he trusted his backs in situations that he appears not to trust them in now. Interestingly enough, over the course of the season he called running plays 55% of the time. That includes the four losses, where he called passing plays 55% of the time.

In the running game, he has the same backs, the same tight ends blocking for them, and at times he's had the same blocking. Yet he sticks to the air game because somewhere along the way opposing DCs figured out what he was doing on the ground. And he's failed in his reaction to them.

Either his players need to execute the plays so well that it doesn't matter if the opponent knows it's coming, or he needs to disguise his plays so they're not sure what's coming. If he does either, he can run. But he's done neither, and has given up on the run early and often, going back to last year.

When you hear stories of the head coach having to tell the OC to run the ball, doesn't that make you question the OC?

I blame Fox. How long can we keep blaming the coordinators before we start to hold the guy who hired them accountable.

Agreed

Panthers have replaced every coach on the team over the past few seasons trying to correct .

But Fox has final say over all game plans and adjustments

Hennen was thrown under the bus by fans for his game plans

Now Davidson is being thrown under the Bus

Either both were really sorry at what they do

Or the head coach will not let them change things

If you replace coaches to improve and you don't improve

One needs to remove the people above them

Its hard to sit back and read so much rubbish and babble about how much Davidson sucks. I remember over the years his plays have been solid and I pretty much respect some of the things he is doing.

Instead of everyone hooping and hollering about Davidson, why is no one speaking about the offensive line? I don't know what game you were watching but the offensive line kept folding like some family dollar fold up chairs.

I don't care how good of quarter back you are if your line isn't holding up you aren't going to make any plays. The person we need to hold accountable is the offensive line coach. He isn't doing a good job prepping the guys for exotic blitz packages. In fact he had the line looking like a fourth rate bunch of scrubs in the preseason getting beat by 2 stringers.

Also the same oc that you are talking so badly over called the same play that Matt Moore threw the interception in 4 man traffic when Grant jumped up for the ball and had his balls on the helmet of King. But on that same play if the line would have given Moore more time (hehehe) Barnidge was one on one and had beat the linebacker but when you are on the run you don't see the whole field.

So beat up the offensive line coach and give Jeff a break at least for now.

Also Jordan Gross look simply pathetic out there and he pissed me off in an interview smiling like a possum sh*t wasn't funny or a smiling matter. He looked like a goof ball because he was part of the reason why Moore got a concussion because he got beat all night plus Osi owned Jordan.

I don't know if Peppers departure has anything to do with his dismal play this because now it's looking like Peppers was the one that sharpening his pencil. If that is the case letting Peppers go was a big mistake unless one of the rookies or vets needs to step up and challenge Gross or he will continue to look like a blob of poo.

Is this Chevin that calls all the WFNZ shows?

Honestly if you can't run with a 2 TE, power I formation then you just can't run. We would be better off swinging guys out of the backfield and running screens then. But a big part of the problem was the offensive line getting no push all day.

Thats not really true. We are small on the line without Otah and we were being overpowed. We just cant bully other lines like we did last year with Otah and Vincent. So We need to use single back sets or split back sets to confuse the Dline. Run RB screens, use high % passes, ect. If something is not working you have to adapt. Its a different line this year so you have to adapt your gameplan to them not the other way around. I just hope Davidson sees this and learns.
