Good things from the game

Yes, it was a terrible loss, but there were a few positives.

1) We made it to the red zone multiple times. No, we were not able to punch it in, whether because of shoe string tackles or poorly advised throws that resulted in INTs. However, red zone success tends to regress towards the mean, so there is no reason to think that we will fail to score as many times as we did this game.

2) Special teams were not atrocious. Kick and punt returns actually looked pretty good. Coverage was good. We had one bad snap in the rain, but otherwise they did not look terrible.

3) The running game will not be that bad every game. There were multiple times where it looked like a run was about to spring for a big gain and a great tackle was made, and that will not be the case every game.

4) The run defense held the Giants to 3.3 yards per carry, and was dominating in the first half.

5) We had the lead, on the road, going into halftime, against a good team that has made the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years, and only missed them last year because of a complete collapse down the stretch.

These are positive things that we can hopefully carry forward. This is not to say that we will be a great team going forward, but there is every reason to believe that the final score was not indicative of the way the team played.

we made it to the red zone because of turnovers and special teams play. how often did we start from the 20 and make it to the red zone.

moore made some bad decisions and those floaters have to go but i was most disappointed with our secondary the most. we're much better than that. we finished the season ranked 4th in pass defense last year.

we missed otah

and play calling was horrible especially in the red zone.

1. Defense - minus Godfrey I thought looked good. 2nd half I think was just the result of being on the field too much. I would like to see more from the pass rush but overall they looked much better than I thought they were going to be (my outlook prior to preseason based on the roster).

2. Mike Goodson - showed some flashes.

3. Steve Smith - not too much rust. I wonder how healthy he is though.....a lot of downs like Moore's first pick he wasn't even on the field for. I doubt he would have been that winded. I also recall some early downs were the only WR was LaFell.

4. Jarrett - one game he just needs starter reps to prove himself. THEN people can bash him if he doesn't.

5. Dan Connor - didn't mean to list him last. Solid performance.

Not too much good comes from a loss. Its not like this was Pee Wee team playing a Middle School team with much bigger kids and saying here are the things you did good. This is professional football. These players get paid to win not to loose. I would prefer to post about the things the team did bad and need to be corrected.

Why did we quit running the ball. You know teams get tired in the second half and we have two of the best backs in the league. We were only two scores down in the 3rd quit on the run. The passing formations allowed the Giants to double Smitty and pin their ears back and go after Matty. It worked almost got him killed.

Run and pass blocking. Too bad to even discuss.

Wide Receivers minus Smith. They cannot get open.

Matty looked loss. See above. He does not have confidence in his oline and Wide Outs. Don't force passes in the Red Zone. The 9 missing points would have made the game a lot different in the 4th.

No pass rush on defense. Looked great in the preseason but allowed Manning too much time in the pocket.

Marshall and Godfrey. Both looked like rookies. Marshall sucks in pass coverage and Godfrey forgot how to tackle. He looked scared to make contact. (looked like some of the kids on my sons Pee Wee football team). I give Marshall a little slack because of the lack of pass rush.

Retemnav, you made superb comments on the things the Panthers did right in the game. I hope this continues but there are a lot of things that need to be corrected.

One last thing. We should not read too much into this opening game. A win would have been nice but look what the Seahawks did to the 49ers. Probably their only win of the season.

Sincerely,

Forum Everyday Reader.
