Has anyone heard that if Moore does good he will be traded

Ah, but Moore not being old could just as easily mean that he sticks around longer if he proves to be that good.

Mind you, I'm not about to predict a Favre/Rodgers situation on the Panthers. But could something like that happen here on a lesser scale? Sure.

So how long would you keep Clausen here? Matt's entire career if he turns out to be amazing? Let's say Matt has eight solid years in front of him. You'll sit Jimmy all eight?

Look, if Matt is the man, there is NO need for Jimmy to be here unless we know for a fact that Jimmy is trash. If he's trash, let him ride the bench for his career here. You don't keep an A+ talent on the bench, you just don't. And if they're both A+ talent (no one has that answer yet), one of em will be starring some place else while the other stars here.

The truth is, no matter how good he looks in practice or preseason, unless Clausen gets in some meaningful playing time (and in more than just one or two games) we won't have the first clue whether he really is A+ talent or just the next big QB bust. And barring injury, big-time failure on Moore's part or the sheer miracle of a John Fox led team having repeated blowout wins, that's not likely to happen.

As far as philosophy, as long as the starter is getting the job done, I sit the backup. Doesn't matter who he is, how talented he might be or where he was picked in the draft. And yes, if I believe Clausen is a quality backup, I hang onto him for as long as I possibly can, even if it means him waiting as long as Aaron Rodgers did.

Worth remembering there was a lot of angst over the Packers decision to go with Rodgers over Favre. Nobody knew how good he was (or wasn't). That decision could easily have been a disaster. Happily for the Pack, it was a success, but that doesn't guarantee Clausen will be.

Also worth noting that in order for Clausen to sit behind Moore any longer than the length of his rookie contract, he'd have to decide to re-up here. Should things play out that way, he and his agent may decide to seek greener pastures. But realistically, he might wind up finding out that he'd have been better to stay a backup (and he wouldn't be the first prized rookie to find that out).

Bottom Line: It's his agent's job - and his - to look out for his best interests. The front office's job is to build the best team they can, and if that means keeping guys who might be starters elsewhere in backup roles here as long as they can, then that's exactly what the Panthers will do.

(and any other team in the league would do the same)

Nothing says confidence in your quarterback quite like your teammates voting Steve Smith as a captain over you, when everyone and their mother knows that something like that is going to be picked apart by the media because there's a huge quarterback controversy here to begin with.

Not picking Smith as a captain would just kill his vibe and we all know what happens when he isn't happy. As for a QB controversy, there never was one...it was all created by media and fans who longed for something to fantasize about.

I don't view them the same, but as a practical result, yeah. There's always 'sign and trade", but when you flesh that out a bit, here's what you see...

.

True, RFA is not the same as a trade but it's not too big of a gap. The bottom line is, since he's not under contract , the RFA tender is about the only option to try to get compensation without a big commitment to Moore. The compensation is set based on the tender but we can negotiate lower compensation with interested teams. Franchise tag would be to expensive unless he becomes Brady. It'll all be moot if he bombs.
