The Giants defense

No most folks don't discuss football anymore. Too busy finding clip art to download.

As to your question, we moved the ball very easily against Buffalo but didn't sustain drives. The turnovers in our end of the field also contributed to us abandoning the running game for the passing game. The longest drive they had all day was 55 yards. We also had pretty good success throwing the ball and decent success running. We had 115 yards running and 325 passing. And the only touchdown we had was a Williams run from 15 yards out. Smith had 100 yards, Barnidge 77, even Williams had 50 receiving.

The problem was not moving the ball it was scoring points. And honestly I think we helped them tremendously. The Bills defense was awful that day, but our scoring offense was worse.

If they are as porous as the Bills were, we win this one easily.

I was there. I couldn't believe how much we were passing, especially when we weren't really down much. After two missed field goals we didn't even try another, despite being close enough twice. It was just a really strange play-calling day.

And most of these people who download clip-art all day probably couldn't tell you want a tampa-2 is anyway. It makes me wonder why I bother.

It strikes me that the Giants are set up for the blitz, that they're built to go after the passer. They stocked their roster with guys who could get to Romo and Mcnabb, not guys who could stuff the run. Goff is their MLB, and he's fast but can't shed blocks and has been called a liability in coverage. Boley's never scared me, not when he was a Falcon and not now (who goes shopping for Linebackers in Atlanta, anyway?). And Bulluck is their own version of Na'il Diggs. At 33 and coming off ACL, how good can he be?

So I'm hoping to see a lot of runs up through their DTs, and see if Goff can bring down Stewart without help. I also want to see the tight ends used a lot, especially in the seam. Based on their set, and our strengths, it could be a very difficult match-up for them.

Jake threw three interceptions, all of which came early on drives. Kenny Moore fumbled. We missed two field goals. And we passed 44 times.

Two points here:

First, you can blame Jake Delhomme for all our problems last year, and a lot of you will, or you can look at the bigger picture. Williams averaged 5.6 yards per carry, but only got 16 of them. Stewart got 7 carries. We punted the ball eight times, and two of our drives ended on downs (one was at the half).

And how we performed against Buffalo is not relevant, since the personnel are completely different.

Second, Jake is no longer here. The Giants have different personnel. Are they suited to the Tampa-2? Who's their MLB? What are their DTs like?

Do people still discuss football on this forum, or is it all about bashing players and coaches?

Quite honestly, its to early to answer those questions. First two or three games in a season under a new defensive or offensive philosphy are usually wildcards. Preseason doesn't provide enough information. No one knows how they will turn out.

My guess is that their defense will struggle a bit until they figure it out. The question seems to be which will struggle more, their defense or our offense.

So all three INTs were early in the game.

Do you believe in momentum?

No, they were early in drives, spread out in the game. The first one came on our first or second drive, and led to Buffalo's first TD. The second two led to Buffalo 3 and outs, and they didn't really end any big drive by the Panthers. It wasn't like we were knocking on the door or anything.

We piled up offense, but we did it in an unexpected way, we muffed a punt, we missed field goals. Just a bizarre day that shouldn't be discussed in a thread about what the Giants' defense may be like.

Fewell also sounds like a read and react guy, for what it's worth. I wonder if the Giants will have as much trouble as we did adjusting to it.

They're running more of a bend don't break like we did with Trgo, with some cover 2 sprinkled in, according to some of their fans.

We struggled with a new D early last season and we have much better personnel, particularly in the back 7.

Their LB's are average at very best, so I think there will be plenty of opportunities to move the ball as long as we don't shoot ourselves in the foot.

yup. lets get those TE involved.

I am wary of underestimating the Giants Defense. I like their draft picks.

Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph are solid players. Not only that their safeties Antrel Rolle and Kenny Philips are pretty good too. PLUS they have big time emotional motivation. We embarrassed them last year they are gonna be hyped to exact some REVENGE. It's gonna be tough. I think our best hope is we keep "the Lesser" Manning off balance and our offense clicks enough to score.

I know I'm changing the subject a little, but I truly believe that if the draft was help today Hardy would go ahead of JPP.

It was bizarre that day moving with ease between the 20s and then nothing.

As for the Giants, I do think they will make it tough early. And we will have to keep it close. But hopefully Moore has some success early and builds some confidence. Hard to tell what will happen.

I really think that they will be vulnerable to our tight ends and screens if we can execute. If we don't come out too predictably and just run on first and second down but instead spread them out and keep the safeties deep, we can run with much better success as the game progresses.

Pierre-Paul and Joseph will be good players by the end of the year. Fortunately we get them early. Rolle and Phillips are solid but neither are dominant and the rest of the back seven are average at best. If Moore has time to throw, he should find openings. Hopefully as you say we can keep it close until the offense gets on track.

End of the year? that's far from a guarantee it usually takes two years if not more to develop a defensive lineman especially one as raw as Pierre Paul (if they ever develop) also Joseph looked awful i saw pre-season action of him getting manhandled by third string offensive linemen (guys that don't make nfl teams)
