The Giants defense

Last year they fired their DC after the season and hired Perry Fewell from Buffalo. This is the guy who ran the defense that held the Panthers to 9 points last year (2 on a safety). You could argue that we blew it against the Bills because we threw twice as much as we ran, but his defense still worked well against us.

Fewell is a Coughlin guy who's big on the Tampa 2. It looks like he's running it again in New York, although he's throwing different looks out there to disguise the coverages. If he is, do you think we'll actually run it as much as we pass this time? That's how you attack a Tampa 2, right?

If he's not running it up there, what sort of defense are they using?

Two words Jake Dellhomme.

You realize even with the 4 ints we had over 450 yards of offense vs his defense? he doesn't scare me.

they had the 30th ranked rushing defense in the NFL last year...and ended with the 2nd ranked passing D...and we went in with the game plan of throwing the ball...on one of the worst ranked rushing Ds...thats what happened...retarded game planning and jake delhomme...he doesn't scare me one bit if we stick to what we are...a running team

I didn't see the bills vs panther game. Perry's defense is supposed to be a "bend, but don't break" defense that forces turnovers.

seems like a whole lot of bending without breaking.

not really, jakes wildly inaccurate passes were more to blame... and he was tossing ints like beads at Marni gras last year.

not too worried about their defense. even if it proves to be pretty decent eventually, it's a new system being brought in by a new DC. sound familiar? how long did it take to catch on here?

anyway, they aren't as good as the 4 defenses we played in preseason (though you might make an argument they are on the same level as the titans).

i feel better about our offenses chances because of that and because we will have done some actual game planning.

the good thing about this is even if they end up being top ten at the end of the year it's a new scheme and they will make mistakes at first

the much heralded Billy Spagnuolo even gave up something like 70 points on defense the first two weeks his first season at DC due to all the wrinkles in the new system

Jake threw three interceptions, all of which came early on drives. Kenny Moore fumbled. We missed two field goals. And we passed 44 times.

Two points here:

First, you can blame Jake Delhomme for all our problems last year, and a lot of you will, or you can look at the bigger picture. Williams averaged 5.6 yards per carry, but only got 16 of them. Stewart got 7 carries. We punted the ball eight times, and two of our drives ended on downs (one was at the half).

Second, Jake is no longer here. The Giants have different personnel. Are they suited to the Tampa-2? Who's their MLB? What are their DTs like?

Do people still discuss football on this forum, or is it all about bashing players and coaches?

    • Qbs aren't defined by physical abilities. Brady, Brees, Manning, Montana, Warner,.....doesn't seem to correlate.

    • If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
