Predicting the Inactives

I say we give Jarrett some time at starter..that is if he actually starts...maybe till midseason and see if he has produced. If he hasn't by then we cut him. Lafell will then be our number 2 guy and Armanti can become activated. By midseason I'd say Armanti will be a lot more comfortable at returner and reciever.

8 inactives, ranked from "sure thing" to "ehhh, maybe"

T Otah

LB Senn

RB Sutton

QB Pike

WR Edwards

DT Neblett

WR Gettis

LB Norwood

I just don't think given Edward's progress in the pre-season that you can justify putting him on the active roster yet. He would literally only be available as a backup punt returner. I don't think they'll be running the wildcat with him just yet; if you're going to direct snap, do it to DWill, who has shown what he can do out of it.

I could see Gettis and Martin switching places, but because of the difference in styles of the two and game experience, I think Martin makes a little more sense to be on the active roster, mainly for special teams. Of course, Gettis took a few kick returns in the last preseason game and looked decent, albeit against 3rd or 4th string players. Still, I think Gettis is the call here.

Norwood makes sense given the depth in front of him at LB/DE. I could see them keeping him active as a 'playmaker' type guy, but I just don't see anywhere else that they'd want to skimp at. He could possibly switch with LB Nic Harris, but I think they'll go with experience over promise, at least for this first game.

Look, Edwards won't be inactive. The work he needs to improve won't happen if he doesn't see the field. I'll also point out that there's no one on the roster who had more catches during the preseason than Edwards. Couple that with him being the second PR, the key to the Mountaineer package, and a potential quarterback should the game become a bloodbath and well, you can't leave him sitting on the bench in street clothes.

They won't sit Jarrett, either. If they were going to deactivate him, he'd have been cut already. He'll stumble onto the field, ask for directions, find his spot at the line of scrimmage, check the scoreboard, pick his nose and then lumber seven yards down the field and short arm a catch right in front of him.

What do you think practice is for? If you have to be on the field of a real game to improve, why do we even keep a practice squad around?

He's a 2nd PR guy that had a hard time catching punts, the Mountaineer package is less effective than just direct snapping to DWill, and if it came down to losing both QBs AND our emergency QB in a game, we'd just go with DWill running the direct snap all game. Absolutely no need to throw a guy who's not adjusted to a new position and a whole different game speed into the first game of the year in a really hostile environment.

Julian Edelman was inactive for the Pats first game of 2009 as well. It's hard to convert from QB to NLF WR. Doesn't mean anything about Edwards skills or eventual impact, and I fully expect to see him active in the near future, maybe for the first home game, but I seriously doubt it'll be this game.

Yeah, let's let him improve by fumbling half of his punt returns. That will do wonders for the Panthers' winning percentage.

Face it, if AE is active anytime during the first half of the year, it will be because the FO wants to save face over the indefensible selection of AE.
