I hate silly "if we don't cut/fire/bench so and so I'll stop being a fan" tantrums.

That said, I have to admit it would be really tough to watch another year of Mike Trgovac coached defense.

Never said i wouldn't be a fan. I was just stating how it at this point we can still be hopeful that trgovac is gone. I'll still watch as I always have.

When Minter retired and we had huge holes in our secondary, Lewis did a hell of a job. Suddenly now that Lucas has lost an edge and Marshall isn't improving any more he sucks?

Godfrey is a rookie, remember? In a new position? Did a hell of a job, right? That's coaching, and Lewis is one of our better position coaches. I wouldn't want him as a DC, but he's great where he is and won't be easy to replace.

I agree. Lewis is great where he is, but may fall to the 'Peter Principle' if promoted to DC. The 'Peter Principle' is being promoted one step above your competency.

So is Lewis going to soft zone pressure looks because that is what he wants to do or that is the scheme Fox wants him to run. If his defenses were in the top 10 while at Pittsburgh and suddenly he goes to New York and Carolina and the defenses are in the 20s, why is that his fault. As a position coach you do what you are told. As a coordinator you have the autonomy to do more of what you want (head coach willing). He may be wanting to leave Carolina not only to be a coordinator but to escape a defensive strategy that he doesn't like. Before everyone throws him under the bus I wish I could hear what he really thinks of Trgo/fox's scheme.

I'm back and forth on Lewis.

Good in Pittsburgh? Yeah, but do you credit him or Cowher?

Bad in New York? Yep, but do you fault him or Coughlin? (scapegoat?)

And what of Carolina? Scheme issues have to be laid at Trgovac's doorstep. Individual coaching issues are on Lewis and Gillhammer. How do those fall out?

Gamble? Much improved under Lewis.

Lucas? Downhill, but how much of that is being miscast? (bump & run vs zone)

Harris? Still good, but not like he was last year. His fault? Or did he have to spend too much time covering for Godfrey?

And Godfrey? Rookie? Yeah, and he hit the rookie wall pretty hard. Stewart did too, but played through it and past it. And getting a rookie ready is part of the coaching staff's responsibility?

Bottom Line: There's just too many question marks for me to be able to support elevating Lewis to DC, but I don't think there's enough damning evidence to say he deserves to be fired from his current spot.

Ummm..... If you like a coach and have him under contract you DONT let him find other jobs.

The Panthers are running a business.

maybe they are just "super nice"

Actually I think they are "super nice" in that they allow guys to seek opportunities for advancement.

Pretty sure the policy doesn't mean they can just look for lateral moves whenever they feel like it.
