I would have liked Moore over Smith as well, but the players are the ones who vote and I imagine they have a better idea of who our lockerroom leaders are.

I imagine with so much youth -- especially at the wide receiver position -- many of the young guys are looking for Smith's tutelage this year. And in the past year or two, Smith has attempted to step up and work with younger guys, most recently Kenny Moore and Trent Guy.

It's not like it's the first time he's been made a captain -- although it is the first time since he punched Lucas.

By the way, do all players vote for the team's captains, or do defensive players vote for defense, offense for offense, and special teams for special teams?

Steve Smith has achieved more than almost every single member of the Panthers combined outside of a handful of key guys (Kasay, D-Will, Beason, couple others).

Panthers put up with his fights and BS and we graciously accept all the TDs he scores and games he has won by himself. Sounds like making him a captain isn't too out of line.

being a great individual player doesn't mean you should be considered a team leader. Every other year Smith displays some pretty bad or dumbass behavior. He also has voiced some bias about not helping out his position players if they happened to be high round picks.

Now that Smith is a Captain, it's time for him to act like one and take a proactive role in mentoring the young receivers.

Smith being voted captain shows you how few leaders we have on offense. I think Williams is much more of a leader then Smith is.

Brayton obviously is very underrated by our own fans and media but the players get it. Brayton was second in sacks last year and first in tackles among defensive linemen. He has a great motor, never gives up and is the recognized leader on the defensive line.

He is a captain because players recognize him as a leader off and on the field. I know everyone gets excited by Hardy- me included. But Brayton is as valuable or more than any one else on the defensive line. He isn't sexy or a sack machine but he gets the job done every week and is the most consistent guy we have on the line.
