Let's pretend JR is trying to tank the season... (a discussion about trade value)

There are far too many people who think what has happened in the off-season with the Front Office has been a rebuilding effort and an act of not trying to win this season and look ahead for the future.

If this truly was the case, which it's not -- I feel we should be a solid 2nd place team this year -- then who on our current roster possesses the biggest trade value, and what do you feel they're worth?

Chances are they'd have to be worth draft picks (if we're truly rebuilding and sticking to the Carolina mindset of not bringing in high prices players from other teams).

Is it Smith? Gross? Williams?

Why, and what are they worth to you?

In my honest opinion, the only Panther I wouldn't mind seeing 'let go' is Goodson, and he clearly doesn't have that great of a trade value. I love seeing what he does and have good faith in the guy, but think he's not something the Panthers necessarily need -- but that argument is for a different thread.

"...a rebuilding effort and an act of not trying to win this season and look ahead for the future."

I think you're misinterpreting what "far too many people" are thinking. I have not heard anywhere or read anything that stated JR was trying to "tank the season."

Sorry, but regardless of the players on the fields, the human nature of a competitive athlete is to try to win. As much as some people believe it would be easy to do, I think it would be extremely difficult to put on the uniform of a team and go onto a field of play with the intention of losing.

The entire premise is misunderstood and the big picture is being missed. There are critical CBA negotiations about to take place. The owners have vowed to stand together in a show of solidarity and Jerry Richardson is their leader. And he is attempting to lead by example by not spending a lot of money in spite of the lack of a salary cap.

There will be a lockout prior to next season, beginning on March 1, and the gate revenues will not be there. Jerry and the ownership group are going to make money during the lockout season by not spending money now. They are going to make money from the TV networks, who were idiots enough to sign a gigantic contract that will pay owners even if there is no season. They will make money by not paying players' salaries next year.

There is no intent to "tank the season." What better time to rebuild a team in a league where there is such an urgency to win now than the season before a lockout? It's an entire 14 month period without football, what better time to step beck, rethink your situation and take advantage of an extended layoff?

hes talking about the several people on here that think JR doesn't care about winning this season (bc we didn't sign TJ, and a bunch of other big name FA's), and is willing to tank it for the sake of the owners in the CBA, or some other idiotic and untrue reason. not quite sure, i don't listen to all the arguments that support that case

You have to ignore the crazies.

Let's not confuse priming the team for a new Head Coach with throwing a season away. Also let's not forget how Marty Hurney is a guy who sets his plans and rarely modifies them as he goes along. In other words, whatever he's planned for this team to perform didn't involve TJ Houshmandzadeh 5 months ago, and it probably still didn't when he was released into the open market a few days ago either.
