Dear Panthers, in regards to keeping Gettis instead of pursuing Houshmandzadeh

Reason why scoring no TDs in preseason means no big names wanting to come to your team. Yeah preseason is all about just finding out who has what it takes to make the team, but you also got to at least be a little bit creative with the game plan if you dont want your offense becoming the laughing stock of the NFL and driving top free agents away (when you know you have a weakness at a particular area and need help). And TJ was cheap too.
Isn't that assuming that a FA would look at preseason performance instead of how we finished last year? The only offensive changes from late in the season were Moose and Hoover, although maybe Hoover was already out (can't remember).

If I'm a top WR looking to contribute right away, I look at Carolina and see a young QB who popped a 98.1 rating last year in the last six games, a top WR to run across from me who demands double coverage, and a running game to keep the defense honest. There's a lot of upside to the offense. I kind of doubt anyone would look at our team solely in the context of preseason, particularly someone closer to the game than we all are.

Even if they took last year into consideration, we still were 8-8 last year and many who dont know us look as those last 5 games as teams already in shut down mode. Our offense looked like crap in the preaseason being the first team in 14 years to not score a TD in preseason. They will see that there are other teams out there that look more Super Bowl bound than we are. I doubt they are going on hope and potential like alot of us are to legitimize that our offense will be good this season (im in the wait and see mode). They want the sure thing and Baltimore is the closest team right now at the moment to make it. Alot of people picked them in the offseason to make it to the Super Bowl this year. Who picked us? Our preseason offensively did nothing but add support to those against us.

Although I wanted us to pursue Housh, and the fact that he signed a one year deal for pretty cheap, I still am holding out my anger. Why?

A.) If it came down between us and Baltimore. Most people would pick Baltimore.

B.) I'm still hoping we are going to sign someone else.

If we don't sign anyone you might as well start praying our key guys: Williams, Beason, Stewart, Kalil etc. don't get major injuries because this season is going to be lost offensively.

There's no doubt Baltimore and a small handful of other teams would be a better landing spot for someone who wanted to win a championship now. But I don't think Carolina would be rejected in the same way that St. Louis would, particularly by a receiver. I got the idea that you were suggesting that they would, and I don't think so.

Bottom line though--Housh made the choice, the Panthers didn't. The article you posted makes that pretty plain. People around here seem to assume that all we need to do is snap our fingers and any free agent will just show up for the vet minimum. It just isn't the case.

well, the browns had to sweeten the pot a little to probably convince Delhomme to go there

in Housh's case he's probably thinking "i've spent enough time playing on shitty teams that can't win playoff games and don't even make the playoffs most of the time so i want a ring" hence, Baltimore can lure him in for less money than inferior teams because they actually are contenders

I kind of think that's a reach. I would be really interested in knowing if any team offered him more than the minimum.

Well if you were Housh would you rather have Joe Flacco or Matt Moore throwing you the rock?

No contest.

Boldin, Stallworth and Mason in your WR core or Smitty and no one?

No contest.

Panthers 50-1 odds to win Super Bowl, Ravens 14-1.

No contest.

Probably silly to ever think he'd come here.

what is the point of going after someone that wouldn't want to come here? pointless. you just hate fox and hurney

true that ...I can not wait for Fox to be gone.

Do we really need to make a list of all the players would could have gone after?? It is truely a miracle Smitty is still here.

Guys keep in mind your misguided optimism of developing these young WR's should be crushed by the team's inept ability at doing so the last 7 years.

uh.. yeah.

------

saying our draft picks development has been buried on the depth chart by FAs is a good try.. except not when you are talking about the WR position...
