Panthers keep Pike, waive QB Hunter Cantwell

From what I read it looks like it was a financial decision as much as it was talent or potential. If they get rid of Pike they will have to pay 85% of his salary this year to the other draft picks. If they get rid of Cantwell it will cost them something like 225,000 less.

Imagine that. A decision driven as much by money as talent. Makes sense really if all other things are equal.

Should help guys like Gettis also.

cantwell was never going to be our #2. the FO was just posturing because clausen had'nt signed his contract yet.

It was probably easier than that. At the beginning of training camp he was the 2nd best option at that point. Problem for him was he did nothing to distinguish himself in camp or in preseason. He had his big chance to start a game in the fourth preseason game and did nothing. Similar to guys like Tyler being cut as well. You have a chance and if you don't win the job you are out. Pike was cheaper and will now has his year or two to prove hinself. We might try to add Cantwell to the PS.

Does anyone think Pike would clear waivers, if we later waived him and signed a cheap veteran QB as a #3 or just go with 2 QB's and put Pike on the PS? Didn't Dallas try to stash M.Moore away and we snatched him up?

In my opinion, keeping Tony Pike was the correct agree decision, one that should pay off in the future.

Pike has exceptional mobility and is a project just learning the system but i feel he has a very good upside.Especially, once he hits the weights, gains strength and gets familiar with throwing the deep balls,NFL game speed and becomes more familiar with our offense scheme.

For a quarterback that missed OTA's and had to play catchup in training camp,i felt he did a very good job.

cantwell had all of last season and most of this off season and camp to put distance between himself and pike. we already knew pike was a project from the start and he may never be anything other than a clipboard holder, doesn't matter if you have 2 guys ahead of him who may start long term

That would be wasting time on Edwards to learn the other QB's. He needs to focus on his role on the Panthers for Sunday.

I don't know that I agree Squirrel... I think that he is probably already learning some base packages to take advantage of his talents, why not throw him a few more plays so that he could be used as an emergency QB and open up another spot on the roster?

I don't think that will hurt his development as a WR.
