Fox/Hurney's Biggest Blind Spot - WR

You can keep drafting them from now til eternity, but it doesn't amount to poo if you don't develop them....

I swear our receivers are instructed to go find somebody in the secondary and stand next to them. They are never open and cant remember the last time someone other than Smitty caught a ball in stride....

This is because Smitty is an absolute beast. I can't really expect anyone else on the team to perform at his level. :o

Keary Colbert

Drew Carter

Dewayne Jarrett

Ryne Robinson

Brandon LaFell

Armati Edwards

David Gettis

Free Agent WR's

Kevin Dyson

Ricky Proehl

Keyshawn Johnson

WR's Traded For:

Rod Gardner (6th rounder)

I might be missing some, but come on. There are absolutely no success stories on this list (the second coming of Moose is about as close as you get, but that's offset by the fact they let him walk the first time. Proehl was a good #3, that's all).

Part of being a good leader is realizing we all have our blind spots and Hurney and Fox somehow refuse to believe that they don't know WR's.

They've done great at RB's and Defense, but can't they see they need to go for outside help on this one? Bring in a big name and another pair of eyes?

* QB isn't a heck of a lot better, but it's not anywhere near this level.

I think that Fox did see that need. This year we had a huge change in the Wide Receiver position when Richard Williamson was replaced by Tyke Tolbert. And this year we took three in LaFell, Edwards, and Gettis, and they've brought in a few new faces that stand a chance of making the team. Rookies generally don't do well, so I wouldn't despair over those guys.

Moreover, this year we drafted Quarterbacks. As much as people on this board might hate to admit it, a receiver doesn't become great by himself. Smitty worked very well with Jake's style, but disappeared with Weinke/Carr/Testaverde under center. And I really doubt that Vincent Jackson would have become an all-pro if Matt Leinart was throwing him the ball instead of Philip Rivers.

Now we have young receivers and a QB of the future who's known for his accuracy. No matter who coaches the team in 2011 and 2012, they're probably going to get credit for the emergence of a passing game that's as good as any we've seen since 1998-2000. And the seeds for that were sewn in this draft.

Early on, Fox couldn't get the running backs right. Then he couldn't get the line right. And now he can't get receivers right. He's just not an offensive guy, but between he and Hurney they learn and adapt.

I think too many buy into this tho. If this is true, then leave WR's alone until rd's 3 or later.

If you think about it we have never drafted a WR out of the 1st round with Fox so really its not expensive. We also have tried to replace Moose's blocking ability for the past 3 years. I dont know why we just dont put a TE out there and let that be the end of it.

FINALLY. My psychosis with this team has been debunked.

I called for the WR scouts to be fired this offseason. It's like Bernie Madoff was involved the last few years with these picks.

I've been saying this for 3 or 4 years. How many years have they been looking for a good # 2 & # 3 WR?
