Fox/Hurney's Biggest Blind Spot - WR

Not trying to derail a thread here but what about DT? I think that might be even worse. It's a little to late for me to be looking at the drafts/numbers/signing to know for sure but I can't recall one DT they picked up that has amounted to much. I guess Lewis and Kemo probably did preform okay but so did Moose and Prohle from the WR FA list.

Back on track...

It is there blind spot. And every team and coach has them. It's not just Fox and Hurney with WR. And I do believe it has a lot to do with development of the player not the level of talent the player has or doesn't have.

This is why trading for a proven talent like Boldin makes so much more sense than using those picks on huge risk projects like AE.

Trades like that aren't 100% guaranteed either. I wished they would've drafted a WR with that pick instead of Edwards mostly because... Edwards has been playing QB for the past few years.

Eh, I don't see a guy like Boldin suddenly becoming garbage. He could get injured sure but you can say that about anyone. Just seems like with our drafting/development record bringing in a guy like that gives you a much better chance than going with a big project. Hell, at least draft a polished WR if you're going with youth.

WR's Drafted:

Walter Young

Keary Colbert

Drew Carter

Dewayne Jarrett

Ryne Robinson

Brandon LaFell

Armati Edwards

David Gettis

Free Agent WR's

Kevin Dyson

Ricky Proehl

Keyshawn Johnson

DJ Hackett

Moose

Mark Jones

WR's Traded For:

Rod Gardner (6th rounder)

I might be missing some, but come on. There are absolutely no success stories on this list (the second coming of Moose is about as close as you get, but that's offset by the fact they let him walk the first time. Proehl was a good #3, that's all).

Part of being a good leader is realizing we all have our blind spots and Hurney and Fox somehow refuse to believe that they don't know WR's.

They've done great at RB's and Defense, but can't they see they need to go for outside help on this one? Bring in a big name and another pair of eyes?

* QB isn't a heck of a lot better, but it's not anywhere near this level.

Ricky Proehl was not a good #3, he was a great #3. Other than that, I agree with you. But I think the problem is that when they look at wide receiver, they look at the ability to block first, and the ability to catch and run second. When picking up speedy players, they tend to cheap, going after projects like Carter and Edwards and even Jarrett, instead of a top flight receiver. They really need to spend a 1st round pick on a top flight receiver. Its something we are going to have to do soon as Steve Smith is getting older.

Well, the thought that comes to my mind is: do they really care about having good WR's or just servicable ones who can take the pressure off the run game long enough to get in another run.

I really think this is it right here. I mean we could of had Bolden for a fair price this year but chose not too. We are also no strangers to a trade and Bolden is a solid blocker as well. We just really dont give a damn about WRs.

I think too many buy into this tho. If this is true, then leave WR's alone until rd's 3 or later.

Im not sure how you can say no success for Lafell, Gettis, and Edwards seeing as there not even fininished with there first season.

Young was a seventh, Carter a fifth. No much to expect that late.

Robinson was promising but had a serious injury.

Colbert and Jarret(provided he plays like he's showing) are the busts.

I don't believe there incapable or stupid in drafting WR's. There a running and defence kind of team. There just not gonna draft/sign many high profiled recievers. For better or for worse. Theyll take there chances (Colbert, Jarret, Keyshawn) but just havent had the luck.
