Delhomme, Anderson, McCown, and Cassel; A Comparison

Just asking, but why would the Pats franchise Cassell? Doesn't a franchised player get the equivalent of what the 5 highest paid players in the league at the position are making? If so, no way they franchise Cassell with Brady in the flock, that's rare air...

I believe its the average of the five highest payed player's yearly salary at the position.

They'll franchise him because Brady's rehab is behind schedule and Cassel will want a multi-year deal worth some cash.

So, its probably cheaper to franchise him now and let him go next year, or see what happens.

I don't know all of the logistics behind it, but it has been reported and discussed:

I think that n4s720 is right... it has a lot to do with Brady's injury and also the tremendous year Cassell had... If they don't franchise him, it will allow some other club to come in and make a big offer and take him away. If Brady is still not 100% next season what would they do?

Yeah, I hadn't realized that Brady's surgery leave question marks on his ability to return next season until after I posted. n4s720 had it right. It would definitely put a strain on them to have two QB's that highly paid, but it's the Pats, who cares...

Damn right, I don't give a sh*t how it affects the Pats... I hope they rot in QB's...

I just didn't see how we would ever get Cassell without breaking our bank and/or trading away a lot, and I don't think he's the right guy anyway.

If I know the Panther's FO, they'll go after some second string free agent that they think has potential to compete with Jake IF they do that at all. They may well be content to let Moore and McCown compete with Jake in training camp, happy with what they have???

I'd not be totally pissed off if they did. Despite the sophomore slump of Matt Moore, I think he has ability to be a quality player, given time to grow...

Yeah, and I don't even know that I'd call it a slump... don't forget that knee he hurt... I saw a lot of potential in him last season.

You're right... we're all just stung right now from the playoff game (some more than others)... I'd rather them focus on the Defense in the offseason. Aside from Jake's (and the coaches) mental breakdown Saturday, the offense was clicking in the last half of this past season.
