We Run to set up the pass....

The preseason is not indicitave of the regular season but having said that declaring us as a run only or executing as a run only team has it drawbacks.Last year is a perfect example. The fact is you take what the defense gives. If the defense stays with 8 in the box that dictates passing.

John Fox took over this team in 2002. Since then I'd have to be nuts to even think of the number of times Weinke, Beuerlein, Delhomme and others have walked to the line of scrimmage, stared straight into an 8-man box and still run the friggin' ball.

And as long as the Carolina Panthers have one legitimate WR, teams will continue to stack the box because I guarantee you there isn't another WR on the Panther roster that deserves to be doubled.

i don't think people realize how overall successful carolina has been running the ball against 8-man fronts.

the tail end of last season is a glaring example.

it is a play action offense. they run to set up the pass.

Oh I get it ! I also get we were 8 and 8 last year. What one dimentional running team has one the superbowl since the ravens.Do you really think we can outscore a team like the Saints,Packers or Colts with a run only offense. What if you get behind by 21 do you keep running the ball, third and 8 do we run the ball?It also depends which defense is playing 8 in the box.Last year we could run against the Bucs but they had a horrible run defense. It want work against the raven and Jets. The run offense is predicated on a solid defense and field position.

So far our defense looks good but who knows what the regular season brings.

Oh I get it!

Which is why I'm not worried about this offense. Yes we are out of rhythm, and haven't found the endzone, but have a look at this if you will. in 2008 when we went 12-4 and had the 10th overall offense (19th passing, 3rd rushing). we saw success. because our focus was on running the ball. That is how this offense works:

2008 Pass attempts (246 - 32nd in NFL) Rushing attempts (504 - 6th in NFL).

This preseason were are looking to see what we can get out of the passing game. Of course they would like to score, thats how you win. But I'm pretty sure they know how many plays they are running and how its being distributed between passing and running. We are a running football team, that is how we score, and that is how we win.

2010 preseason Pass attempts- (117- 6th in NFL) Rushing attempts- (70- 24th in NFL)

expect that to change dramatically when the season starts...

(Stats from nfl.com/stats)

I'll take Delusional Homers for $1,000 Alex!

already been said but basically 8 in the box is not enough. even if its a good team. see the MIN game last year. put nine in there and you've got man coverage on smith. smoke route when you see that.

we may get hammered at the line some, but we keep at it to wear down the DL, and eventually get the big play.

Play Action Offense won't work if we can't establish the run. Which good teams will make sure we won't be able to...

I will be interested to see those "good teams" keep us from establishing the run. That sir will be a hard row to hoe. We have lots of new pieces to the offense. Gary Barnridge and Rosario need to be included more, AE and Lefell are finding their place, and oh yeah we have two young QB's competing for the starting job. It is not all gonna come together in preseason. Hell it will likely take till our bye week to see what we have and don't have. What many of you don't seem to understand is offense takes more time to gel than defense. So i agree with the OP that Preseason meant JACK and that we will be a different team against the Giants.
