fork or spoon. usually a fork. i don't know why the hell you'd need a knife to eat pasta. that's just wrong.

the spoon is typically provided so that you have something to press your pasta against as you start twirling it around the fork, to help make sure you don't have a bunch of pieces dangling off the end of your fork. this is why you usually see them in restaurants, because people don't want to slurp up hanging strands of pasta at a nice restaurant. if i'm at a nice place, i'll usually use the spoon. if i'm eating pasta at home, fork only and my face is about six inches away from the bowl.
