Ok somebody explain to me why Belichick is still universally regarded as the no.1 HC

ok how about the even more embarrassing loss to the Ravens?

or getting outplayed by a lesser talented Giants team with heart in 2008?

how about dropping their third playoff game in a row?

how about being 2-3 in the playoffs since being caught cheating against the Jets?

keep slurping

If you're going to just nitpick a game here and there and ignore dominance in others then we can do it to all the guys you said have been better than him recently (page one).

Andy Reid

With that great performance in the 2009 playoffs, he managed to give the Dallas Cowboys their first playoff win in 15 years and also helped end the immortal Wade Phillips' playoff drought. This year they lose in the first round at home to a 6th seed, however, they could have been had a much easier game against the Seattle Seahawks had they been able to take care of a home game against a Vikings team that was starting a 7th round rookie at quarterback who was originally drafted to be a wide receiver. Reid has a 10-9 career record in the playoffs, Belichick 14-5. I know which coach I'd rather have.

Tom Coughlin

Surely you've got an argument here since they won the Super Bowl in 2008 in such dominating fashion. Oh that's right, the Giants haven't won a playoff game since and haven't even made it to the playoffs the last two years. Both seasons the Giants have started out hot, gotten a lot of press as Super Bowl contenders and choked down the stretch to miss the playoffs entirely. One of those games was a 41-9 drubbing courtesy of our Carolina Panthers, a game which convinced many Panthers fans and our front office that Matt Moore was our franchise quarterback. And then there's this year, blowing a 21 point lead in 7 minutes to give Andy Reid yet another win in a big game against Coughlin. Coughlin is 8-7 in the playoffs, and has on how many occasions had to deal with accusations that his team has quit on him at the end of the season?

Sean Payton

Do I really have to even give an explanation here? People were already convinced that his Super Bowl run was a fluke (re: Vikings turnovers, onside kick, Manning throwing a pick 6 in a big moment, etc), and then they go in to Seattle as a double digit favorite and lose to a 7-9 team from the NFC West in the first round.

Mike Tomlin

Tomlin has the chops in terms of playoff records, true. But missing the playoffs in 2009 due to back to back losses to the Browns and the Raiders isn't something you'll see anywhere on Belichick's resume, and we haven't seen Tomlin coach without Hall of Fame defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau beside him on the sidelines. He's also breathing a sigh of relief that the Jets were able to win yesterday because he's 0-2 against Belichick/Brady.

John Harbaugh

Yes, he beat Bill Belichick in the playoffs once. He's 0-2 against him in other games and he's never won his division. Maybe it's just me, but shouldn't he be required to have at least gotten his team to a Super Bowl or maybe even had a home playoff game before you throw out that he's better than anyone on this list?
