Ok somebody explain to me why Belichick is still universally regarded as the no.1 HC

picked up a magazine the other day called Sporting News (?). Actually I'm not quite sure what the f*ck it was called, all I know is it was one of those "primer" issues that fill you in on everything that happened since the superbowl if you haven't been paying attention since, or, if you even forgot a load of the sh*t that happened in 2009, they also tell you who won and forecast the season ahead (don't hold your breath Panther fans: they predicted 8-8 with the Falcons winning the division at 12-4)

Mind you, i'm not writing this as one of those inferiority complex panther fans who bitch and moan every time they feel one of their players/coaches/GM/et all is snubbed, which, i mean, the general rule of thumb is if a panther isn't ranked top 3 in some category, it infuriates the sh*t out of most of our fans. (ZOMG why iznt donte rozario dawson ranked no.1 TE in teh leaguezzz?!!!!111 NO RESPECTZZZZ)

I just really want to know why, after not winning the superbowl since the 2004 season, after getting outclassed by a young Baltimore team in the playoffs last season, and after the fact that, well, besides the 2007 season, they really haven't even been the be all end all in their own conference (the Colts have owned them overall the last 5 years), they ranked Belichick no.1 coach in the league, and, in a more general sense, everyone still seems to blurt his name out without hesitation every time the question is raised.

The media lovefest with this guy is on a different level of worship. If you didn't watch the games you'll think he fields this immaculate team that can't be denied and it's just not true. The Pats have been a very consistent team the last five years. They haven't gone less than 10-6. In 2008 they barely missed the postseason despite missing arguably the best QB in the game for almost the entire season and fielding an inexperienced no-talent lipless goober in his place. Yes, I am totally aware of all the good things Belichick has done in the absence of a Lombardi. Top 5 coach? Sure. Top 3? I'm open minded. But no.1? Really? For what?

The fact of the matter is that there was a time when Belichick coached his team to world titles with a Phil Jackson-like consistency. But that time has been gone for a while and the Pats have not played on that kind of level except for 2007, which, i mean they basically had to spend a sh*t load of money on free agents and swindle the Raiders front office (which i don't think is much of a challenge) to be able to pull off. The only thing Belichick is guilty of the last 5 years is being universally overrated.

The difference between him and other successful coaches in the league is simply luck. He was lucky as hell getting Brady in the draft and he was lucky as hell to be in a division where the Pats won pretty much by default. I've give the guy props for actually getting it done, but to give him so much credit is ridiculous imo. I don't know why people still say he's awesome at picking up talent in the draft when he took Maroney over Deangelo(just as one example).

The guy is a great coach but he's also been extremely lucky imo.

1) He still won with Matt freakin' Cassel

2) He knows exactly how far to bend the rules without being seen as breaking them, and communicates this well to his players. Pick plays, offensive pass interference, etc etc.

two very good strong points, but neither of them are the bottom line. also like to note that the whole spygate thing was met with consequences. so i wouldn't say he has the greatest sense to bend but not break the rules either. Funny how since then he's won, well, 0 trophies.

So who would you take over him then ?

Belichick recently is no better a coach than Andy Reid, Tom Coughlin, Sean Payton, Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, and Ken Whisenhunt. Until he retired last year i would've said Tony Dungy was hands down a better coach than Bill. The Colts were superior to the Pats from 2005-2008.

Because he's had so many coordinators leave for head coaching gigs and accomplish jack squat in those jobs. Now where the Patriots have screwed up in recent years is in drafting. It's easy to throw out the names of recent Super Bowl and conference champion participants and say that they are better coaches, but that is part of the instant gratification nature of NFL fans these days. Let's see if anyone thinks at the end of this year without Kurt Warner that anyone realistically will mention Ken Whisenhunt in the same breath as Bill Belichick. Is John Harbaugh really an X & O genius because Ozzie Newsome has drafted Ed Reed, Ray Rice, Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs, Flacco, Michael Oher, etc.?

      I think that had his knees been in good shape, he would have been extended by now.  My opinion is based on the fact that they do not to seem to confident about his knees, so should we?  On the other hand, all veterans are playing with some chronic injury of some sort, so how much weight do you give it?  And in today's market, Moton's salary is not overblown.  Unless your concern becomes a problem, you stay the course, I would think.  But Moton will probably not be our tackle when we are a playoff team, so the time to start grooming his successor is probably this year.

      The Athletic FS had a Panthers fan write in about Mykel vs Jalon. Derrick K was surprisingly in favor of Mykel but gave a pretty compelling argument. You’re getting a baseline great run defender with some nice pass rush potential. You’re not getting the hyper athletic, violent, burst off the snap type, but he’s a grinder who can maintain a great level of play throughout a game. He’s the ideal type to eventually have paired with the more peppy/athletic edge rusher. No one says to avoid a 1B just because you don’t have or can’t find a 1A. And who knows, he could still become a double digit sack guy. 86” wingspan is monster. With Jalon, you’re using him as an EDGE. So you’re banking him fitting a super rare spot, that only Parsons has really followed through at. Myles Jack and others just didn’t work out as well. They mentioned you may just be getting a shorter Luvu-plus rather than a Parsons-lite.  Mykel at 8 will not surprise me in the least, and it could be a solid move.
