If Corvey Irvin is cut...

Irvin got hurt last year pretty early during the preseason and spent the entire season on IR. To me this is his rookie year and I felt he looked good so far in the first three preseason games.

I don't see them cutting Irvin. The Panthers have always had 9 DL on the roster and I would put Irvin ahead of Eric Moore and Taylor to grad that last spot.

You can never have too many DT on this team...

You guys really should do your research before making such bold statements. How could you call Irvin a bust when he hasn't had the opportunity to play a regular season game yet? A guy that had a solid performance in preseason and training camp both this year and last year but was unable to play a season due to being placed on injured reserve isn't a bust in my book. If you all had done your research you would also note that prior to Irvin's injury last preseason he had just racked up a sack.

Guys coming into the league at this position often times are work in progress, especially when you aren't able to get a consisten flow of reps in order to get into rythmn. Hell Steve Smith's first couple of years were nothing to write home about.

Having a career in professional sports from the management side, I strongly disagree with you guys.

None of the starting DT's currently on the roster have numbers or prior experience to boast about.

One day you all glorify someone then the next you trash them.

I really hope Irvin isn't cut and proves you all wrong!

Welcome to the Huddle.

1) I hope your background in professional sports involved better research than your ideas above. Go to NFL.com and look at Steve Smith's stats from his first few years...Pro Bowl RS as a rookie, 1,000 yards in his 3rd season. Safe to say that's something to write home about.

2) I never glorified or trashed anyone on here, don't make blanket statements.

3) One sack in preseason play doesn't deserve anyone jumping on his bandwagon.

4) I seem to recall including putting the word "if" in the thread title, implying the possibility he is cut. Ignoring the possibility is just that, ignorance. It's about being realistic. I have nothing against him or anyone on the team.

Being realistic indeed however if you read the entire 3 pages worth of thread I think it's safe to say that you along with others have bashed him as a bust along with statements about other players.

It always amazes me how some loyal fans seem think they are so knowledgeable by hiding behind internet reports and stats.

Again I will say I hope Irvin as well as Goodson (I believe he was mentioned in this thread as well) go on to prove you wrong.

Good day to you.

And I feel the same about Edwards also..........

And in reference to Steve Smith I did say his first couple of years not his entire career. His first year he started only one game with 0 touchdowns. My point in saying that is you can't use someone's rookie year or lack of a rookie year as a basis to say they are a bust.

Please point out where I said he was a bust. I'll wait patiently.

If a team drafts a player in the third round and he never sees one second of regular season playing time, that's not a good pick.

Irvin has been fine. No, he hasn't made any plays...good or bad. He's held his ground, made tackles when the play came his way, and has gotten a bit of penetration. But with Landri exceeding expectations and so many players making big plays, it seems that Irvin has been somewhat lost in the shuffle.

I also think people forget that he is still a developing player. I know that most fans here are all about instant gratification, but Irvin is a guy that has the potential to be a very solid penetrating DT. Anyone that did even basic research on him after he was drafted would have realized he was not a finished product, but has good potential, and would likely take a year or two to begin showing that potential...and that was before going on IR. So if he does get cut, it is more due to other players stepping up and not enough roster spots than anything negative about him...of course if that does happen, I would bet we try to stash him on the PS if he gets through waivers.

    • Nah I wanna see these NFL evaluators talking about his prospects at WR aren't good because I would LOVE to see thier explanations
    • You do realize that raw stats don't make someone a better or worse player, right? To begin with, the last time I checked, 1,319 is more yards than 1,258, so T-Mac had more yards (but I'll forgive you as a typo there and say you meant catches lol), but that's before even factoring in that Hunter did his in 13 games vs 12 for T-Mac because Arizona didn't make a bowl game. It's also completely ignoring the team around each player.  If you think Hunter having the 8th place finisher in the Heisman voting at QB isn't going to result in helping his top WRs stats, then you're sticking your head in the sand to purposefully not see it. Hunter's QB had 353 completions for 4,134 yards and 37 TDs vs T-Mac's QB who had 260 completions for 2,958 yards and 18 TDs. But sure, let's rank NFL prospects by their stats and say the guy with more catches and TDs is the better prospect.  So on that note, I now change my mind, T-Mac is no longer the best WR in the draft, it's Nick Nash who had 104 rec, 1,382 yards, and 16 TDs, all numbers better than Hunter's... because that's how this is done, right? As I've said before, if someone wants to like a player better than someone else that's totally fair, but come with real reasons, talk about their play, but to talk about things like stats as your reasoning, when you ignore the obvious and massive flaws in using those stats in that way, just makes you look dumb.
    • Nah you don't go out and put up the numbers he did without being able to run routes dude is a football junky so he works on his craft he isn’t THAT much more athletic than other players to just be able to go out and do whatever and succeed at that level
