Don't Overestimate the Teams Loyalty to Delhomme

As Fiz pointed out, our options are too slim for anything other than Delhomme starting next year. This is bad if Matt Moore or McCown are not the successor to the QB position. We can't get a good prospect in this years draft. Next season will be Delhomme's last, and that means either a rookie, Moore, or McCown for the following season. Being a pessimist, I don't see us drafting a #1 round rookie who ends up starting and doing well.

Delhomme will inevitably have several bad games next year. He is consistent. He will win more than he will lose. His future on this team depends on which ones he wins or loses.

Honestly, with the stupid playcalling we witnessed Saturday night, I don't know that we would have won two more games anyway, even if we had managed to beat the Cardinals.

I don't know how people expect a 34 y/o QB to have a better year next season than the one he already had. And everybody throws the past stats at us to make him look like a hero. Well you can't restore the past, I bet that's what the Jets were thinking when they picked up aging Brett Favre. All the crap he did instead of what the potential was of him doing it again with a shoulder that can't last 16 games anymore, and diminishing overall physical capabilities.

Jake is in the older half of QBs and he has a bionic elbow. What are people expecting him to do, win games with his arm like he used to 5 years ago? An upgrade at QB has been a little overdue and we need a young, talented option to start shaping into the next starter.

"It will be challenging for Carolina and its fans to trust Delhomme after Saturday night’s divisional playoff loss."

This was the only line from the Schefter blog article that makes a good point. While most of us believe Delhomme is going nowhere, one thing you can never underestimate is the power of the fan base's support for the franchise and the decisions they make.

Last season, they knew if they did not make significant changes, the fan base could really lose faith in the organization. The day after their loss to end the season last year, Jerry Richardson was on record saying "we will be making significant changes this off season". That was as bold a statement as he had ever made. And they did make significant changes.

Look at this year. They will have to acknowledge that no one is excited to have Delhomme back next season. They are smart enough to realize that in order to sell tickets to start the year, the fan base is going to have to have something to be excited about. This could be something as minor as making it known it is an opening competition for the starting job, or as major as releasing Delhomme.

With enough public sentiment, the team will do something to make sure there is a buzz to start the year next year...mark my words.

That's the same dumb, uninformed speculation from Schefter that's quoted in the other article. It's the same piece where he suggested the Panthers could look at Michael Vick.

Schefter used to be a good reporter. He's really gone in the toilet.

I say everyone "suck it up" and since we dont have a #1 pick this season give this one to Jake and then next year draft a QB #1.

thats my .02

(and The Golden Calf of Bristol will be comming out of college :)

Only problem with The Golden Calf of Bristol is he's projected by almost all the teams as a fb or te in the nfl and not a qb. So the earliest he gets picked is in the 3 or 4th round.

Whether fans trust him or not doesn't matter worth a crap. People have PSLs and will be there no matter what. If we go 8-0 at home again next year everyone will be delighted again.

What does matter is what the players think of him. As long as they are willing to go to war with him and believe in him, nothing has changed. From what I am hearing he is still the recognized leader on the offense. So all the pissing and moaning I hear from the so called fans counts for little.
