What happened to Ken Lucas?

when we signed him lucas was defintley one of the best zone CBs in the leauge, and that year he played well enough to earn a top 3 ranking in one of the publications I liked to read

He had some odd injuries here and there in 06, most serious would be his shouldler, he didn't tackle like he used to

07 was more of the same

this year he's just played bad and really should have his deal restructured with the current situation we are in

most notably though is that we have lost almost all of the talent we used to have on the defensive line, we are not getting pressure with our front 4 and we are having to blitz alot more than we are used to

compare peppers, buckner, carstens, rucker, and wallace to our current crop of D-lineman, it's not even close

we just need to get back to john fox style football and get more talent on the D-line quick, our offense saved our asses this year

Which is kind of sad, because that defensive line is not that impressive.

Tim Lewis I think had a lot to do with Marshall and Lucas sucking so much. Age is often noted, but Lucas isn't that old.

Gamble survives Lewis because I think he is much more adaptable in schemes, he is definitely the most athletic of all the corners where as Lucas and Marshall rely on being the receivers face, and aren't too good at playing of receivers.

Look, when Lewis leaves the Giants, Corey Webster becomes a very good corner, after looking like a bust. He is a physical corner who is playing very well. Lucas was a physical guy, as was Marshall, now they are soft and beaten often.

Age is a factor, but he isn't that old, and even so, how do you explain Marshall?

I agree coaching has alot to do with the Regression of all our players even Gamble to some extent. None of our CBs kept there hands on the balls this year and believe it or not coaching can fix that. Also When Gamble got burnt this year it was the same problem that all our CBs have. Not playing the ball well. I would like to point this out maybe why Gamble looks so good is cause its easier to pick on Lucas and Marshall and not cause he is a Shut down CB.

If you saw the deep ball to Fitz live you'd see Lucas play the ball horribly. The ball was actually underthrown and Lucas was watching the ball but made no adjustments. All Lucas had to do was stay in front of Fitz and jump but for some bizarre reason he completely over ran the play and ended up behind Fitz.

Cause he was in a zone and was supposed to be in front of him.

exactly we were playing zone and he was playing his spot. biggest reason that passing teams picked us apart all year. Lucas is still a good corner, he's just a physical corner that likes to get up on the line and jam receivers then play the ball once timing between the qb's and receivers has been messed up. I'd also say the same thing with marshall.

Did you read the second half of that sentence?

What Lucas did wrong in that play, was he went for the interception instead of attacking the ball at its highest point like Fitzgerald did. He didn't think Fitzgerald could make that catch.

Exactly, all Lucas had to do was stay in front of him and fight for the ball. Fitz bobbled the ball the whole way down to the ground.

Confidence. He doesn't have the confidence to take risks anymore. Back in 05 he and gamble took HUGE risks trying to intercept passes and it usually played out for them. Now he's too scared to jump a ball because he feels that he's going to get beat. 06 and 07 seasons shattered him. On the other hand, Gamble seems to have recovered sort of. The scheme is fine, but he's just not being physical on his own. He's not jumping for the ball, he's too scared to get penalized deep, don't you think it was a bit weird that our first pass interference penalty came against the Giants? He doesn't attack the ball when it's in the air, he plays the defender 9.9 times out of 10 often just letting him get the catch and make a tackle. He's turning himself into a Containment Corner. Plain and Simple. If he's gonna do that he'll be better off as a Nickel.
