[The Athletic] Carolina Panthers roster reset: Where they’re in good shape and where help is needed

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dan Morgan led a big Carolina Panthers contingent on Tuesday at the South Carolina pro day, where safety Nick Emmanwori drew a crowd.

The Panthers and every other team are straddling that in-between time in roster construction — with one foot still stuck in the latter stages of free agency and the other foot set on pro days, top-30 visits and pre-draft work.

That was apparent Tuesday when, shortly after their crew in Columbia finished scouting the Gamecocks’ prospects, the Panthers announced they were bringing back veteran wideout David Moore on a second one-year deal. Expect other signings or re-signings to pop up sporadically as Morgan works the margins of the roster ahead of next month’s draft.

With that in mind, The Athletic examines Carolina’s current roster, where the needs are on the depth chart and how last week’s moves could impact the Panthers’ draft plans.

Level of need for each position group according to Joe Person:

  • Low: QB, RB, OL, DL
  • Moderate: WR, TE, ILB, CB, ST
  • High: OLB, S

Joe writes that he hears the Panthers have real interest in Mykel Williams (UGA) and that they should add another safety during the second wave of FA with guys like Marcus Williams, Julian Blackmon, and Justin Simmons still available. For the moderate groups: CB needs comp at nickel for Chau, could see more movement at ILB if there's concerns about Wallace's shoulder, WR needs another piece tho Tet might be a stretch at #8, and need at least one maybe two TEs but isn't convinced Morgan would take Warren if available.

OLB is the biggest need by far at the moment.

Agreed. The only OLBs we have under contract for 2026 are DJ Johnson and newly acquired Patrick Jones. It would be great if Johnson made some noise this year.

Wonnum and Clowney also. Still need another guy who can dependable rush the passer.

There were times last year Huddlers could have provided about as much pass rush as we were getting out there

Lol. Make some noise? Dude has 0.5 sacks in his career and he’ll be turning 27 in October. At his pace, he’ll be 40 when he has his 4th NFL sack.

I am a little nervous they may think we are a lot better than we actually are.

No kidding. God forbid Young regresses or DCs get more tape on him and work on how to stop him. We still need a real influx of talent on this team. We haven’t improved this team in a draft in 7 years and if we reach again at 8, our OL just gets older while we waste yet another draft.

Evero was very high on him.

Not me, just another reach and waste of a 3rd and 4th (Fitterer special). Then again I wasn’t in charge of a record breaking defense last season so I really shouldn’t comment.

My thing with the Panthers is we keep taking half measures in addressing our strikingly obvious suckitude. Fired Ron Rivera and kept Marty Hurney. Fired Matt Rhule and kept Scott Fitterer instead of cleaning house. Fired Fitterer and kept all the Scouts and promoted Dan Morgan. Now we've kicked the can with Evero. Honestly we should have gone with a clean slate at defensive coordinator. I think it was best for both parties. We'll see if the Panthers decision on that continues down the same path. But unfortunately there's one constant that remains from all that I just mentioned. The Tepper's.
