Smith not too impressed with Panthers’ receivers

I hate PantherBob just for the fact that he is a walking thread derailment. How often after he has made a post has the thread morphed into a "you are so stupid, let me count the ways...one...two". Usually during otherwise productive threads. Irritates the crap outta me.

Can I ask all you guys not to quote PatheticBob? Otherwise I wouldnt have any idea what he is saying and my sympathy for his mother and her trailer trash would not continue to exist. Even after being proven dead wrong time and time again, I can tell from the quotes he hasnt learned anything, and that more than anything else is almost annoying as it is pitiful. The worse thing is knowing I have something in common with this numbnuts by being so-called Panthers fans. But the thread of Gayman has rights and his complete ignorance is classic, I do thank your for that.

I agree with Smitty 100%.

When you have a job to do, work to accomplish, and you are the senior member you know exactly what to do, what to avoid and the best manner to accomplish it in. You get a new guy, you know he knows the basics of the job, he could do some work on his own. However, this isn't his first time, he's spent months training, he's had time to get up to speed When you look at the same job he's struggling with, making the exact mistakes you specifically walked him away from, it's not hard to shrug your shoulders in frustration and walk away. The best way to learn sometimes is the hardest.

...the guy is all penned up too...smitty is a race horse stuck in the stables watching his mates out there doing what he wishes he could...and lookin like chit doin it.....and he's a hot head and a bomb dropper... "it is what it is"

AND smitty went to the superbowl when we had a true WR "corps"...smitty, moose, and proehl...

Its funny hearing all these comments on steve smith's personality/character when few of us have actually met him. very insightful

Normally I would agree with this, but you don't have to know Steve Smith personally to understand that he's not the always the friendliest guy in the room.

Just imagine that you're a rookie WR for the Carolina Panthers. What do you know about Steve Smith? You know that he's a great player...everybody knows that. You also know that he can go off on a teammate at anytime, but you have no idea what causes it. How eager would you be to find out? Nobody in their right mind wants to upset their teams star player when they're only a rookie trying to make the team, much less get their ass beaten in the process.

Also, what if Smitty gives advice to teammates like he gives newspaper quotes? You know, the ones that leave you scratching your head and wondering what the hell he was trying to say? How would that help you?

I've met Steve and have had several conversations.

My impression is that he keeps people at arms length unless they are in his family or close group of friends. You see a different person when he interacts with them. He can be a really nice fun loving guy. They get Steve.

But, everyone else gets Smitty. Perennial chip on shoulder and not trusting of anyone. Quick to rush to judgment and temper to match. Probably not easy for a young receiver to warm up to him.

Players like Moose make great mentors for young players, Its rare the star of the team makes a great mentor...it’s usually the other players.

Ever heard the saying that Great players don't make good coaches? There is a reason for that.

I remember Brett Farve saying one time that it wasn't his job to teach Aaron Rogers how to be an NFL QB...he turned out just fine. Let Smitty be Smitty and don't look down on him for what he isn't...a mentor to someone trying to take his job one day.

He played in a Charity Golf tourney up here in G'boro a few years back and he seemed very nice and was very approachable

How about this... we do have a pretty good WR's coach who has a reputation for getting good production out of young players. How about we let him do his job, and then judge the results in week 8 or so of the season, as opposed to freaking out and calling our rookie WR's garbage when they haven't even played in a meaningful game yet? Yeah, I know that's a radical idea, but there you go.

I think LaFell made some promising plays...

I think he'll make even more plays with Smittty, Deangelo, and JStew are out there.

However, I think the point that Smitty was making was that he wants these guys to seek him out for advice and it doesn't sound like they've done that.

People are jumping on Smitty saying he doesn't want to help out the young receivers, well I take a different stance. I know he works with the guys who want the help, I've seen him work a lot with K. Moe, and Charly Martin. Maybe these other guys don't go to him and ask and I think that is what he was trying to say in the article. The rookies have never been on the field with Steve so they don't know how hard he works, so the coaches pointing it out on film can only help. Listen we all know Steve is rough around the edges but if you are willing to listen he will teach. I was at his camp this summer and when a lot of these players sponsor a camp they show up at the beginning and leave but not Steve. He was there working with the kids and being very hands on, not to mention he gave away a ton of stuff to these kids. I guess what I am trying to say is I think Steve wants these guys to come to him and ask questions instead of him just going and trying to tell the guys what they are doing wrong. Steve is not the coach so it is not his job, but if you go to him he will definitely give you help and even stay after practice with you to help you get better.
