Trent Guy and Mike Goodson

I just love how everyone was so impressed with Goodson last offseason, but then when preseason of last year hit and Goodson fumbled a couple balls away, everyone gave up on him.

Then everyone was excited for Sutton (and rightly so), and everyone forget about Goodson. And really no one has mentioned him much on this forum until that return.

It really is a "what have you done for me lately" league.

I'm more impressed with Sutton every week. He can run, he can catch, he can block...and he lays the f'ing wood on kick coverage.

Guy impressed the hell out of me last night...though maybe that's just because I'm so used to seeing pathetic returners. Either way, he showed that he's the most capable punt return guy on the roster right now and I think we need him. If Wright's injury is anything more than minor, I won't be surprised if he's cut or put on IR so Guy can make the roster to return punts. I also think Guy may be more valuable as a receiver than Wright with his speed.

With the way that our defense is looking, we could have a serious shot at a division title and a play-off run. You need quality special teams to make those things happen. Guy needs to be on the team.

After last night I'd expect Guy to be cut and Goodson or Witherspoon to be our return man.

As brilliant as Goodson's return was last night, he's got a history of fumbling and bad decision making on returns. If Goodson can finally earn the confidence of this coaching staff then I'd say the job is his, but I still think we retain Witherspoon as a backup DB after what he showed last night and while he may not have the upside on returns that Goodson does, if he is more reliable than that might earn him the job.

You guys honestly think that just because Goods ran back one kick return that he should get the job ? Not taking anything away from him he's a great player but a lot of that return was luck . He ran into a pile , wasn't tackled , everyone converged on the pile up and he went around . The field was wide open then . Trent is clearly the man for the job , have any of you even seen him play college ball ? He had 917 yards in just kick returns last year and broke 3 records in punt and kick returns at Louisville . The two punts that he misjudged may not have even been his fault they do have a punt and kick return coach that tell you where to line up because they are supposed to know the depth of the kicker so if they told him wrong , It' s not entirely on him . The Panthers will do bad not to pick Trent up cause they really need him .

give the PR job to witherspoon or munnerlyn. between those guys i think you have a good enough returner. keep edwards around as well hoping that he gets it. just let it be in situations where it doesn't matter as much so he can get a grasp on things.

goodson has flat out won the KR job, though.

I think Goodson locked down the kick returner job last night (and he earned it). That return looked a lot like the Steve Smith TD against the Texans in '07. (Steve's was way more badass)

But as for punt returner, Guy catches the ball well, unlike the other dready punt returner the Panthers have been trying out. He also has some good speed and when he had a little room, showed he could break out. I'd like to see him get the punt return job, but he's almost sure to be cut. It's a shame, because he's looked far better as a receiver and punt returner than Armanti.

not to sound like a douche, but that wasn't a return by steve smith in 07 vs the texans, that was a short check-down pass over the middle that smith made magic out of. smith wasn't even returning much in 05, except the nfc title game where he said he was gonna bring one back.....and he did.
