Fastest defense in Panthers history???

Thinking back I do not remember a faster defense on the field for the Panthers. All of the LBs and DE's can play sideline to sideline, the safeties are both young and able to cover large chunks of the field like never before.

But.... there is a downside here. I expect we will have trouble with power running games (think Brandon Jacobs). Many of our players are a bit smaller and faster, which won't be an issue against the shiftier backs like Chris Johnson last night. But wait until a huge OL lines up with a 250+ running back and just goes straight at us snap after snap. Like many great fast defenses in the past, I think we will be vulnerable.

thing about most teams with power running games... we don't face a lot of teams with power running games..

Last season, the giants gave up on brandon jacobs after what.. 8 runs? if we can limit a big back after 8 runs, we should be in the clear if we have the lead.

The key for the D is ball control from the offense. Quick turnovers and too many 3 and out's will kill the lack of depth and the undersized DL.

If Matt Moore can manage the O, keep his team on the field and have solid drives, especially in the 3rd and 4th quarter, this team may shock some people.

I would think a defense that is on the field too much will be exposed no matter the size of the DL and depth.

It is of utmost importance that the offense gets some rhythm if the defense is to keep playing at this level.

The big unknown with this D is how they react in the 4th quarter when they're out of breath and their legs feel like jello. That's where experience and veteran leadership come into play.

Fox and Meeks plan on rotating guys in and out even more than we're use to.

Not to mention, the best defense is an offense that can control the clock.

That's how the Panthers are built.

This prolly is the fastest defense the Panthers have fielded. The players are also doing their assignments better than I've seen in years, and not worrying about the players around them. Players executing their assignments, and playing fast is showing how good this defense can be.

PeteRozelle, this defense doesn't require youth so much, as it requires fast football players who play their assignments. As long as our guys retain their speed (which we've always had a pretty fast defense, when compared to the rest of the nfl), then we'll be fine. It's not like the Panthers are going to stop adding talent to the defense in future drafts.

When it comes to defending against power RBs such as Brandon Jacobs (whom I've heard from analysts is beginning to be considered a back-up & not a starter), I think it would be best to use a double team LB strategy. Beason & Connor look great with speed & I think they could work together when needed against power RBs
