Tolbert Confident that our number 2 receiver is already here

Tolbert sounds as though he has been given his marching orders and not to expect another receiver.

No one is saying Lafell is a bust but he is a project. My beef is why didnt they bring somone that we knew could get the job done.Every team has projects but there are quite a few teams that have number 4 receivers with more credentials than our number 2 plus out of all them we should have a returner.

Well at least everyone has something to talk about

Thomas Davis goes down Gloom And Doom

Harris & Peppers leaves the defense is Doomed

We have NO DE's

We have NO DT's

Meek's defense is looking pretty dang good !!

All that sky is fallen !!

Matt or Clausen

Now after 2 pre season games Without Steve Smith

the WR 's are the new hot topic

Remember

Panthers are a RUN FIRST TEAM

Then they look for Steve

Then a T E

Then one of the other 4 W R 's

When Steve comes back all will fall into place

La Fell was drafted B/C like Moose he was a good blocker

Panthers don't use a TRUE #2 WR like most N F L teams

Even MOOSE only averagged 3-5 receptions per game last season

If any WR other than SMITH can catch 2-3 passes a game ,the drop off want be as bad.

Once Smitty is back drawing all the major coverage some of these guys will come on

Right now they are being covered by DB's that would be covering SMITTY

Agreed but for us to b a pelayoff contender we need a number 2 that averages more than 3-5 per game.I think that was one of the points Steve Smith has been trying to make.A one dimensioal passing team will not make the playoffs in my opinion. In addition, what if Smith would go down?My point is we do not have proven depth at the WR position and that cannot be good.Lets hope someone steps up tonight so we can end this discussion,

I don't agree that our number two has to average more than 5 a game for us to be a playoff contender. When we went to the Superbowl, our number 2 (Moose) only averaged a little more than 3 a game. And our number 3 (Proehl) averaged less than 2 a game. Same with Pittsburgh a couple of years ago when the won the Superbowl. Their number two only averaged about 3 catches per game.

We are a run dominated team. Which means that in order to be a playoff contender, we don't need to pass a lot. We just need to do it well when we do pass. Its the quality of the catches, not the number of them that matter. In 03, even though we didn't throw a lot, each of our top 3 WR's averaged more than 14 yds per catch. The short stuff went mostly to tightends and running backs.

Our number two needs the ability to get relatively deep and haul in 3-5 passes a game. And he needs to block. Hopefully thats not to much to ask from the current crop of receivers.

Prepare to see a lot of passes the TE's and passes to Dwill/JStew/Sutton/possibly Goodson coming out of the backfield until said 2nd receiver emerges. I really think, if used properly, our RB corps could be a real threat out of the backfield.

LaFell will be fine but he's not ready for #2 right now and I highly doubt he will be by week one.

The only problem the panthers have is that we have 3 WRs that do one thing really good. LeFell Blocks, Jarrett can catch, and Moore can run routes. Now only if we could combine all those players we would have someone like Anquan Boldin.... I guess WR by committee dose make more since though.
