Adam Schefter: Panthers could release Delhomme

They could just as easily restructure the deal, pay him a bonus now for extending him one or two years and then reduce the cap hit over the next 3 years instead of all next season. That would be a win win all the way around and he doesn't have to be released.

This is probably the most likely scenario. And IF by some stroke of common sense Fox decides to bring in aQB for the future in 2009-10, then he can warm the bench behind Jake for a 1-2 years while he learns the nuances of being an NFL QB. Of course, my concern is would you want to have Jake as a mentor after witnessing last Saturday's fiasco? If we get a true bonafide signal caller, he may not have to sit for long, though.

Man, what has happened to Adam Schefter?

He used to be good for info, but setting out something like this after both coach and teammates have expressed support?

Throw in that only someone totally uninformed about the Panthers (or a complete idiot) would suggest that the team would touch Michael Vick with a ten foot pole.

Even most average message board surfers know better than that. A paid journalist? Wow

And Hurney has said that releasing Moose was the worst mistake he ever made. If he releases jake it will be the second. We spent years trying to replace Moose and never did, I personally don't want to do the same thing with Jake. I was stunned and sick saturday night but in the end I have liked this year as much or more than any other. 8-0 at home was great and 12-4 was as well. Jake sucked that game but a tougher defense and adherence to what we do best which is run the ball could have changed things significantly. It is always best not to change things wholesale. For me the defense is broken not the offense. If we fix that side of the ball there is no reason to think we can't have a great season next year.

well said...i think a lot of ppl on here are jumping the gun...knowing how jake is (TEAM FIRST guy) im sure he will restructure which will be great cuz we need to go build a defense.....offense is least bit of my worries

This get rid of Delhomme stuff both by the fans and media is ridiculus. We ALL agree he sucked a** on Saturday - but who does everybody think the Panthers can get in here that is any better?? There isnt anybody.

While we are bashing Delhomme, which is warranted - how about a coaching staff that kept calling the same plays over and over and over and over again when it was clear Delhomme was sucking a**.

There is plenty of blame to go around for that debacle Saturday night.

Fox and Hurney have in their own way been trying to find and put on this team a capable backup that can also either start or some day replace Delhomme. To this point that have not been sucesssful. Getting rid of Delhome then trying to find a new starter from what is available basically throwing next season away and will compound what many beleive is an already existing problem with the QB position.

Yeah, look what happened when we let Beuerlein go.

"I wanna see Matt Moore in there next season,"

I'd like to see Moore given a fair chance at winning the starting job. I don't agree with letting Jake go at this time, although he sucked this past Saturday, he still knows the system and can be valuable in teaching a Moore, or another young QB, if that QB did indeed win the starting job. I agree with some of the assesments about how bad the play calling often is, as I've said on other threads, among other things, we're just too darned predictable on offense. Better offensive game management would no doubt help keep the defense fresher, a problem in several of our losses (especially the Giants game!).

We have a lot of weapons to use offensively. I do not understand why Smith isn't involved in a reverse or 2 per game. I would also like to see the wildcat used 4 or 5 times minimum per game, with Smith sharing that with Williams. More screens to our backs and receivers would be good as well. An occasional wrinkle by the special teams, like a reverse on a kickoff return, will give the other teams something to think about whether it's successful or not. These are the things we either lack altogether, or do not do with any consistency.

Wait a minute. Is that even possible considering that 2010 could be an uncapped year?

Where's the capologist when you need one? HELP!

As for Schefter, I put him in the same league as Florio from PFT. Can go from "Way good point!" to "WTF!" in an instant.

Everyone please back away from the ledge.

Immediately.

Having been (like most of you) a diehard Panthers fan since they arrived, I am sick to my stomach at the way everyone is piling on Jake. Yes, he played beyond miserable. However, to ignore everything he has done for the Panthers is shameful. Not too mention that our gameplan and secondary were also horrible. I feel like those who want Jake out don't really understand how team sports work.

Also, I notice posters keep referring to "who could we get that would be better?" I think this is a poor response to all the jake-hate. The best response is that for the last 6 years Jake has played great in some big games, and pretty good overall and to start yelling for his ousting is the type of fair weather nonsense you expect out of a Jets or Dolphins fan, not a true Panthers Fan.

Jake will be back.

And the Cats will be just fine next year.

delhomme had a bad game. it is what it is. the colts have made it to the playoffs what 7 years in a row now?.. and won the superbowl once?? they didn't get rid of peyton manning or tony dungy. they would be stupid to do so. so would the panthers if they got rid of delhomme. he's too good to be a backup qb. its not like we had a bad season, we only lost four games and towards the end of the season it was the defense that fell of more than anything.

You just said "it is what it is".

Those words are forbidden here, leave, now.

Thats a great argument when we win a SuperBowl and make the playoffs 7 straight years until then we have nothing in common with the Indianpolis Colts fans.

:iagree: Someday they'll figure out the grass isn't greener on the other side. Jake did have a bad game. The D has had a couple of bad games where Jake had to sling the ball just to keep us in it.

Get rid of Jake and replace him with who? Look how good an experienced quarter back makes a mediocre team (Arizona).

Just like in the Seattle game, we abandoned the run much too early. We're lucky to have a RB that can score quickly.

    • Really?  Back to this again? How many times have I said that I’d prefer to trade back from #1? Too many to count, but as I’ve pointed out, that’s going to be much easier said than done, as once we signal we want to trade back, teams will know we don’t want any of the QBs and they’d target the 2nd pick in a trade instead. All of my “T-Mac at #1” talk has been discussed under two circumstances… the first being that no QB or DE pop before the draft, and that we can’t trade back. But again, I know you don’t like to actually read that stuff when I say it, as I’ve said it numerous times.
    • Thanks for posting this. While this was far from a great performance, this critique shows what some of us noticed last week. Bryce played "a little better". There is some talent there. But, as you pointed out we really don't have a great pass blocking line for dropping back each down when we are behind. BY has got some bad habits and physical limitations. At times his teammates let him down. The play calling isn't always the best. I hope he can learn from last week and show us some improvement in the Saints game.
    • Oh, and yes, I’d take a WR first in this upcoming draft, but again, that’s not in a vacuum I wouldn’t have taken him over the QBs this past year or likely the ones next year either. It’s all relative to who is available in a specific draft, and I don’t think any of the QB’s are worth the risk at #1 this year. Also the fact that you’ve said you would take T-Mac #2 but scoff at him going #1 is just in itself, super weird.  How you can justify a player at #2 but not #1 solely because of their position and with complete disregard to the other players available, is absolutely crazy town talk
