Yea progression, originality, and diversity are three of the most important factors in determining whether I like a band or not. There are also plenty of progressive bands I dislike, but if they are at least making an attempt to be different then I will respect them.

There is only one band that can pull off a 20 minute prog death metal song and that band is Opeth. BTBAM tried and failed. Their problem is they are trying to be progressive for the sake of being progressive instead of being progressive because it sounds right. When you include banjo breakdowns in your songs just to be different it's time to re-evaluate yourself.

Cephalic Carnage did it pretty well with Halls of Amenti. That's 20 minutes of beast right there.

And I guess that depends on what you do with the banjo...or sitar...or violin or cello or whatever unorthodox instrument you choose to incorporate. Its not what ya got, its what ya do with it.
