Growing Sense that we take Mykel/Shemar, No matter who's available

Reporters have kept hinting our love for those two and it's continuing this week.  It's honestly a concern for me.

Why?

Well, I think it's safe to say (4) guys in Ward, Carter, Hunter, & at least 1 OL are gone by our pick.

That leaves (3) more picks before ours with a group of (6) guys in Graham DT, OL2, Jeanty RB, McMillan WR, Johnson CB, & Warren TE.  This is not even counting if someone reaches for Shedeur or what seems like the fan fave choice in Walker.  That's near the end of what I'd define as sure-thing, higher end R1 talent.

So, the short of it is that a clear Round 1 talent will be available at 8.

Thing is, I can't help but sense an XL situation is happening again and we are completely locked in on grabbing a specific guy/role, no matter who falls.  They even locked in the interior via FA to pigeon this situation.  BPA is going out the window a bit.  Can anyone shake this growing sentiment, or are we looking at the same situation as last year?

I don't know, but even if Graham or McMillan fall, I'm really getting the sense we're just locked in on these two developmental EDGE guys with poor pass rushing skills and we'll have to stomach taking them over potential trade-downs and some straight up more impactful talent.

Talk me out of this concern. Thanks

Per Tony Pauline: I was told yesterday they (Panthers) really like him (Mykel Williams) a lot. I doubt Jalon Walker is going to be there. I haven't heard the Panthers being on Tyler Warren at this time.

Trying to find some advantages:

  • 6'5 260, 34"+ arms, only 21 years old
  • Quality run defense.  Not elite, but it's up there
  • Ceiling is pretty high - sculpt-able if the coaches want him
  • Good speed & power combo

Disadvantages:

  • Behind developmentally as a pass rusher
  • Poor burst - even though he has the size, the athleticism isn't really there you'd expect to see
  • No good counters or real PR gameplan, just an aggressive type with no real plan
  • May be better suited in a 4-3
  • Gets caught sloppy in the upper body, and gets thrown off easily
  • Looked lost at times when he was stifled by OLs
  • Had a few nagging injuries this past year
  • Simply disappeared for long stretches with UGA

This is not a top-10 draft prospect.  But if actualizes and we grab him, with some success, I'll gladly eat crow.

Could be an okay complimentary EDGE talent, but isn't a top guy for a team even if he hits his ceiling.

Shemar would definitely help our run defense even more, but year lack of sacks is concerning...

Shemar I can get.  He's tested super well on top of having some great tuff on tape.  He's just not converting sacks.  If a coach feels like they can get him finer-tuned in that regard, then he should be on board.

Mykel however just doesn't have the athleticism you want, and you can't teach burst. You just can't.  He doesn't play as quickly as you'd expect and he just straight up looked like mid-talent for a bulk of the season for UGA.

It'll be Warren. BPA and a position of need at the same time.

we are not drafting warren if there hasnt been a top 30 visit set up and to my knowledge there hasnt been, tet as wel.  Sure that could change but the focus seems to be on defense

From a scouting report on  of the mock draft sites. Sounds like the next great Panther draft bust to me.

"While there is no doubt that Stewart is a physical freak with an excellent combination of height, weight, and speed, Stewart was an underachiever in college as he is a better athlete than a football player. Stewart lacks instincts as a player, has vision issues, and has struggled to finish some plays. All of those issues are seen in his career sack total of 4.5. With his speed, strength, and size, Stewart should have had some big seasons and multi-sack games in his career. Instead, he had zero big seasons of production despite being more talented than the players he was going against. Stewart is going to need to learn pass-rushing moves for the NFL, as he will not be able to win alone on being strong and fast.

Stewart was an underachiever for the Aggies and never produced up to his skill set. Thus, he is a very raw project entering the NFL. It might take him a year or two of development, and his pro coaching staff is going to need patience. Stewart also is going to have to be very dedicated and work hard to play up to his ability.

Some team sources said they graded Stewart in the second round, and some said they graded him in the third because he is a raw developmental project. However, team sources believe that Stewart could go late in the first round based on his tremendous skill set. He has first-round talent and plays a premium position, so he definitely has a shot at getting selected on the opening night of the draft. Stewart could turn into a tremendous pro, or he could be a bust. It really depends on the coaches he lands with and how hard he is willing to work to turn his talent into success on the field."

We'll pretty much know who the pick is going to be. We've been telegraphing the fug out of our 1st round picks for years.

I liked last years approach where XL just flat said he was going to the be the pick
