The payroll may be low but, as Yas pointed out, JR did cough out some cash.

The FO is going to have to use that money to sign a lot of core players before buying 1/2 an NFL team.

Yas lays out a pretty convincing argument, but like others have said, the true story of what this offseason's movements entail won't be told for another 1-2 offseasons. It's pretty undeniable that the Panthers are set to be in a solid financial situation (disregarding the quality of the team, of course) no matter what happens with the new CBA. It's easy to see Yas's account through rose-tinted glasses.

Richardson's history suggests the team will move aggressively to lock up key core players when the landscape of the NFL's future is more clear. But maybe that new heart is changing his personality as has been known to happen with heart transplants. So I guess it's possible to look at Yas's account through science-fiction glasses as well.

The examples I gave are the most extreme examples, my point is that we dumped allot of guys but didn't bring much in. We have a gaping hole at the # 2 WR spot and we decide to try and fill it with rookies and journeymen... that's the kind of thing that makes you look cheap.

I think that had to do more with the labor situation. FA was slow this year around the league. I am curious. Why we didn't go after a greg carmillo type.

I think looking back we will all realize JR ripped the bandaid off quickly. We were on the down slope of a competitive curve. Let it go on like that for a few years or rip it off and get to the up curve quicker?

I agree, we don't want to pay anyone we don't have to pay for 2011 if there isn't gonna to be a season and we're conserving our resources to re-sign our core players (DeAngelo, Kalil, Davis, etc, etc).

So we are being cheap in a certain sense. It cost us more in the short term to release some of these guys, but in the long term it will save us money.
