Davidson: First two QB spots have materialized, but No. 3 remains up in the air

No. Cant-do-well is a joke and his career in college and the NFL has proved it. If Tony Pike can get some freakin playing time, he'll show you why. He's extremely accurate and makes good decisions. The first preseason game he played well but only got 1 series, and a WR dropped a big ball on 3rd down.

This analysis is misguided IMO. Pike is not getting playing time because he hasn't played well enough in practice. That is not all his fault, it's the fault of 1) terrible prepartion running a spread offense in college, and 2) showing up late because of school.

He may very well be a better long term option than Cantwell, but he won't be able to prove it until he's had time to adapt to a pro system. This is where I agree with some here (vs Clausen) that rookies usually need time to learn how to play in the NFL.

Wasnt much of a real competition Clausen was always going to get the backup spot.IMO

I remember people thinking this was going to be a fair competition.lol

How was it not fair? Clausen clearly beat Cantwell on the field. His draft status and contract numbers never came in to play, and that was the argument.

The fact that we've only seen one series of Pike worries me. I saw nothing mentally that I liked about Cantwell. Sure he looks the part, but so do plenty of other failures.

To be fair, none of our quarterbacks have looked good this preseason; just as none of our quarterbacks -- Moore included -- looked good last preseason.

:eek6:

did he really beat Cantwell on the field?? Because Cantwell has had very few opportunities.

I would not call it fair but thats how the NFL works.

Did you watch them play? Clausen is clearly the better QB and it's not even close. Just the fact that Clausen can get himself out of trouble and throw the ball away makes him instantly better. Cantwell has a great arm, but his feet are sorely lacking, and that alone sets Clausen apart. You can't just stand in one place if you're going to play QB in the NFL.

As for the lack of playing time, the coaches see these guys everyday in practice, so I doubt that has much to do with it. Money and draft status have nothing to do with it.

I think money and draft status play a small part in it.Clausen is the better QB but I still would not call it a fair competition.

It was Clausens job to lose. Hurney has said it plenty of times you cant really judge a QB into you put him in real live game action..when the lights are on. Cantwell has had very little chance to do that. it was never a real competition.IMO

Cantwell got most of the reps with the 2's early on in camp, and they have already had him for a year anyway, so I just don't see how you can call it unfair or say that it wasn't a competition. The better QB has won, that's all. I guarantee you that, if Clausen was looking like garbage and Cantwell was tearing it up, then Cantwell would be the #2 right now.

I said it was Clausen job to lose.

of course if Clausen was terrible he would be the number 3 but Cantwell has said it himself he would have to play way better than Clausen just to get the #2 job.

Its the type of competition you hear about the #1 overall QB has to have. the coaches always say he has to earn it and it will be a true competition but we all know thats a lie.The rookie is going to get the job most of the time.

same thing here with the backup job if Clausen and Cantwell were Close the edge goes to Clausen but thats hard to say seeing as the playing time has not be even. But hey its still a fair competition..:D
