Sports hate

Recommended Posts

I'm gonna expand mine a little.

TEAMS:

1. Cowboys: liked them before Jerry Jones, have hated ever since (very common story)

2. Yankees: all due respect to his family, but Steinbrenner was still a coward who was afraid to allow for a level playing field

3. Patriots: was okay with them at first, but they got to be asinine jerks reeeeaally fast, and then there's the cheating

4. Ohio State: nothing against Jim Tressel really, but three years of having to put up with their fans all the time has turned me against them

5. NFC South Rivals, except the Bucs: I'm gonna catch a load of flak over this one, but hey... :sosp:

Clearly, I'm not a fan of teams who just want to outspend everybody (not the world's biggest Red Sox fan, either) though my Cowboy hate has more to do with their treatment of Tom Landry when Jerry Jones took over. The Pats/ Liked them when they were humble, but it didn't last long. As to the rivalry thing? Well, I can't cheer against the Bucs (for obvious reasons).

ATHLETES:

1. O J Simpson / Rae Carruth : do I really have to explain these?

2. Ben Roethlisberger / Jerramy Stevens / Kobe Bryant: yes, I think they did it, but two got away with it and one didn't (sort of)

3. Michael Vick: dogfighting may not be as despicable as murder or rape, but it's still up there

4. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, etc: essentially any of the "steroid bunch"

5. Albert Haynesworth: not for being thenimrod that he is now, but for the head stomping incident on Andre Gurode (though the other stuff factors in)

I definitely have more teams I dislike than I do players. But then, with the exception of Haynesworth and the steroid bunch, pretty much all of my "player hate" is bound up in stuff that's off-field. I'm just not the sort that can hate a guy just for being a good player on a team I don't like. Ya gotta do more than that.

People may ask why not Tiger Woods? Honestly, I'm just indifferent when it comes to Woods. Likely because I just don't care much about golf. Ditto someone like Floyd Landis. Yes, he was a cheater, but I'm just not passionate about cycling. And I'd probably hate Kyle Busch for being such a jackhole if I were more of a NASCAR fan, but I'm not.

COACHES

1. Rich Rodriguez: okay, this one's a little personal, I admit, but there are reasons, such as his habit of coddling malcontents and cheating on NCAA rules

2. Bill Belichick: always believed he was overrated, but it's his being a cheater that moves me to really dislike him

3. Gregg Williams / John Teerlinck / Alex Gibbs: it's one thing to be aggressive, another to be dirty. These guys fall into category number two.

4. Bobby Knight: this one's tough, honestly, because I believe in being "old school", but to me Knight crossed the line more than once

Again, it takes more than just coaching for a team or an organization I don't like. You have to be unlikable for a deeper reason than that. For example, while I think Phil Jackson is hugely overrated, I can't really find anything hateful about him. And then there's guys like John Calipari. He's a well known cheater, but again I'm not that into college basketball (Knight is bigger than the game). I will admit that George Seifert comes pretty close to making this list, and not just for the obvious reasons.

Mr. Scot - I salute you sir. This is almost a carbon copy of my thinking about all these teams/players/coaches.

Except the Cowboys... Jerry Jones is a douchebag... but I can separate the man from the team. I respect the team for their accomplishments.

I could easily put Jimmy Johnson in my coaches list, as much for his time at Miami than with Dallas. In both cases, he essentially presided over a team sprinkled with hoodlums.

As to his success though, it's not really his fault that Mike Lynn (Vikings GM at the time) was idiot enough to pull the trigger on the Herschel Walker trade.

Wait...Does that mean you also cheer for the Bucs now? :sosp:
