MM deep throws

Bad, bad pass, and as Gantt said, it looked like a punt.

LaFell could have tried harder to bail Moore out. QB gets at least 50% of the blame on that one, though.

I just don't agree with that, LaFell could have run up under the ball. It looked to me like he pulled up early....

A lot of us in the chat room last night thought he could have run it out, but at best he would have knocked it down. Not catch it. It was poorly thrown and Moore just never read the safety coming from up top. It looked like he thought he got single coverage with no safety help, didn't know LaFell's speed, and overthrew him on a punt-like pass. The hail mary was even worse.

I think LaFell definitely takes some blame for the int, don't get me wrong. He should have tried to bail Moore out. I think the best he could have done is swat away a bad throw, though.

At first glance I thought Lafell had a shot at catching the ball or breaking the play up, but at different angle it appeared that the ball was too far ahead of him to do anything because he was being bumped by the other defender.

Moore just needs to throw the damned ball better. Floating a deep ball is not a good thing to do, even if you have Smitty to bail you out.

You know... it bugs me that people keep saying "Smith would have bailed him out or caught it". The problem is Matt Moore knows Steve Smith wasn't out there to bail him out. It shows that he isn't learning the speed or abilities of our Wide Receivers. He admit in the interview after the game he made poor throws and poor reads, as well as dropped balls being a problem. You are the leader of this offense, you need to be studying and learning the tendencies of all of your weapons.

I like how you assume that he does not have a handle on his receivers. Maybe it was just a bad throw? Maybe LaFell just didn't run the route good enough, or maybe LaFell gave up on the play? Or maybe the defense just blanketed him and picked it off (id est, they did well)?

Either way, they both need to step it up if they want to win.

It was 1 of three things:

He overestimated the speed of his target

He didnt make the right read and see the safety

He just threw a really poor deep ball

Even if LaFell gave up a small bit at the end, it wasnt going to be close enough to have actually made it a completed pass.

It was all three, but mostly the first two.

A lot of people think preseason is unnecessary in almost every aspect of the game, but the truth is that situations like this one are exactly why the quality of football improves when the games start to count.

In the regular season, those false starts and illegal formations will be at a minimum. In the regular season, by the time we get there, LaFell or "LaFall", as he was called all night, will have seen that play enough to make him sick and will know what to do next time he gets a jump ball. Same for the muffed punts.

Matt Moore has no business throwing a ball that long anyways, IMO. He just doesn't have the arm for it. Watching Clausen throw after watching Moore throw is like comparing a pea shooter to a shotgun. Not saying that makes him a better QB, but let Clausen take those snaps in a heave ho situation. Or even Cantwell, who beats them all in distance and velocity.

Don't agree. So far Moore throws a better deep ball than Clausen. In fact, I think that was the comparison given in preseason, that Moore has better arm strength, Clausen has better mobility.

Through all of training camp most people were saying Clausen looked the slowest of the quarterbacks and had the slowest footwork. Moore does not have better arm strength as evidence of his hail mary that landed 10 yards shy of the end zone. Even a miracle catch would have been pointless.

One thing from last night I liked from Clausen was that after bad throws he was smacking his hands together. After drops he had no reaction. Moore on the other hand after the Rosario drop just looked frustrated and started shaking his head slowly while the camera was on him. Clausen seemed more calm and collected.
