MM deep throws

We run screens to Stewart and Williams but not many at all to Smitty. We throw the quick out to Smith on the smoke route,, but that isn't a screen. We are more likely to use Smitty on the reverse more than the screen.

Sorry, I should clarify: I consider the smoke play a screen just for simplification, even though it isn't one. Don't ask.

Slants are really a third and short play or a hot read on a blitz.

And we never do it.

But it doesn't work with 8 or 9 guys in the box.

Oh, it could be done. Hell, if Jake can just throw up stuff anywhere on the field and let Smitty catch it and the team goes 12-4 then anything is possible.

And by destroyed I mean he laid the wood and Smith bounced right back up and helped chase down Aqib Talib who had intercepted the ball.

That happened last year too, didn't it?

I honestly think Clausen's tendency to look for the short routes first and get stuck on them has a lot to do with both the way he was groomed to play for many years and the fact that Weis was his coach at ND. NE's offense is predicated on the short pass, often times even in place of the run game... Their short passes are actually their run game... They didn't start chucking the ball downfield much until they got Moss.

So although our offense is similar to that of what Clausen was in, they operated under different objectives, at least that's my opinion from the outside. We do throw short passes and hope to bust them for big gains, especially with Smitty, but we use the pass to supplement the run game with the threat of a long gain... So, if the shot is there we have to take it. He just seems to take what's there immediately without waiting to see what will develop.

Also BTW, I think Moore's arm is great. I've always been fascinated by the issue of arm strength... You hear how some guys are touted to have a rocket arm or can 'make all the throws' but some of those guys can't throw it more than 40 yards.

Favre is probably one of the few I have ever seen that can throw it deep AND zip it simultaneously... Almost like throwing a bullet deep downfield.

Moore has always struck me as a guy that has nice touch on the ball but can't throw really deep. He has a strong arm in terms of he has great zip and velocity on the ball for all throws unless he tries to lay it over the top, kind of like he did on the INT and the hail mary. The INT was actually a fairly well thrown ball b/c it was fairly deep and had some velocity to it, didn't hang much... The hail mary... Well... *vomit*

It was actually a pretty pass, IMO. I don't think that is how he intended for it to fly (I think he intended a bit more "zip" on it, but maybe I am just over-perceiving), but it ended up a pretty nice pass. Smitty would've caught it, and it would've been considered a great pass.

From the stands it looked like Moore was staring down his receivers. He also overthrew LaFell, but he would have overthrown Moose too. He just heaved it up and it went too far. Smitty would have found another gear and caught it, and that's why he's an all-pro.

And I like what I see from Clausen so far, but he clearly needs to get stronger. So far, he's looking like a very solid pick, but still a rookie. His poise can make you forget that.

Don't even talk about the hail mary play. That was embarrassing. There is no reason for that ball to not be in the end zone. Had one of our guys even gone up and made an amazing catch he would have fallen about 10 yards shy of the end zone. Terrible.
