MM deep throws

I can't believe anyone thinks Clausen can throw a deep ball if his life depended on it. He lofted one deep ball that wasn't close to anybody. The only deep balls other than that were the ones he threw into the stands. Of all the quarterbacks we have Clausen seems to have the worst touch on anything over 20 yards down the field. He really isn't ideal for our kind of offense.

He would do well in an offense that worked with a lot of screens and quick slants, which is something we should do anyway.

Screens and slants are fine as long as you mix them up with skinny posts, seam routes, and an occasion deep ball. Otherwise it is a WCO which is not us as all. You have to throw to set up the run and vice versa. He seriously reminds me of David Carr and that is pretty sad. It was clear tonight that we weren't going to score with him at QB unless we started in field goal range.

Actually we do quite a lot of screens with Smitty anyway. I'd like to see more slants.

Keep in mind I don't know that much about football; I just post here. :P

I think they got away from the slant last year because Jake kept throwing it to the other team.

And we all know the patented Smitty smoke-screen. Do you remember the variation they used in the Arizona game last year that had Smitty scoring on a long TD? I don't remember seeing it since that game

most DB's aren't going to fall for that. You need a single high saftey also which is rare for smitty. Throwing that play when he's double covered means smitty gets destroyed.

A nice little play-action slant to Smitty when they are putting 8-9 in the box would be great. They would just have to bite really hard or the play-action would have to be quick or else someone might decide to ****** it.

Oh god, it was such a sexy play. I remember it like it was this morning.

I think one of the things that made that play work was the fact that every corner in the league knew the Panthers ran the smoke screen to Smith at least once a game. I think on that particular play, the corner was playing the smoke screen which is why Smitty was able to turn it up and blow past him on the double move.

But yeah, if there's some sort of bracket coverage with a safety over the top of Smith and we try to run that, I think you've pretty much got it right... Smitty will get destroyed.

It'd be interesting to see if they could turn that into an option. Teams are getting so good at diguising coverage now--let Smith read the safety movement and decide if they can pull it off. Then again, maybe that's doing too mcuh.

We run screens to Stewart and Williams but not many at all to Smitty. We throw the quick out to Smith on the smoke route,, but that isn't a screen. We are more likely to use Smitty on the reverse more than the screen.

Slants are really a third and short play or a hot read on a blitz. But it doesn't work with 8 or 9 guys in the box. That is when you isolate him on a long route and just throw it up for him to run under.
