2nd impressions

The Don

Still, you have a much different perception than the few people I've seen post about him in the past few hours. I wasn't really impressed by him when he was in, but he didn't completely disappoint either. I think he is much more useful for passing out of the backfield (not as a WR), and perhaps as a KR.

HE didn't really disappoint he just didn't look any different from last year. I guess he did look more agile, he moved well laterally. But I don't think he's much stronger, and he didn't look than great on his runs.

I really shouldn't make my opinions though until I can watch the game.

The only time he looked "strong" was on that stiff-arm when he gained 15 after he screwed up the KR.

I agree that he did not look great on the runs.

He hesitated on his KR's all night and I don't remember him doing that before. Something was up with Mr. Goodson tonight.

Well, he was injured (not sure what kind of injury) a week ago or so. He also hasn't returned in a while, IIRC.

I think Goodson is having confidence issues. I saw it a few times when he was rushing tonight also. He would see a cut back lane then hesitate and stay on course. He'll get there. The KR debacle probably had something to do with it. Cut once ok, cut 4 times...not so much.

That KR that he screwed up was pretty bad, but I imagine it is pretty easy to continue dancing once you start. I don't really fault him for that too much, especially since he made up for it about 2 plays later.

Actually, during the game when I was in the chat for a few minutes while Goodson was in, he busted a pretty nice run off early and I said he should be playing ahead of Sutton because of his speed. BUT, then about 2-4 more runs after that, he made horrible reads/cuts or was indecisive and cut down potential gains.

One specific time I remember, watching the game on TV, he got the ball and ran up towards the top of the screen (which would be his right), their entire defense crashed to that side and the backside corner ran pretty much to the tackle on the weakside... The line had them held up and Goodson could've cut it back and busted a huge gain, but it looked like he just hesitated, waited a sec, thought about it, then ran straight into the pile of bodies anyway... He hadn't even been touched yet.

I believe there was another run he did in the same fashion driving the opposite way, where he could've cut it to the outside for a huge gain and just ran into the pile. I mentioned after he did it that all he had to do was cut it outside, and someone mentioned in the chat "his vision is no better than last year." So, I'm not the only one who noticed it.

He still has huge potential. In fact, I remember wondering if DLo was actually going to be any good b/c he did the same thing as a rookie and even some in his 2nd year. It could just be getting adjusted, but with his speed, he definitely needs to be used somehow in our offense. BUT, I will point out that he appears to be the slightest looking 210 lbs. I've ever seen, and almost always goes down on first contact.

Other impressions: Defense looked great, we are REALLY fast top to bottom on that side of the ball. All our DBs looked GREAT. Captain looked a lot better in coverage tonight than I remember at anytime last year. Gamble is Gamble, which is awesome... And Marshall is right there too. All the LBs did work as well.

Love the set of DTs we have, and I've been a proponent of playing our young guys more at DE as well in CJ and Hardy, and they didn't disappoint. EB was the stud of the group tonight, and if he does that much more I'll get the oven ready to prepare my crow... Ed Johnson and Landri looked almost dominant out there.

The more I see of Clausen, the less I like. I saw him play here and there at ND. I know he was groomed to be QB, but it's almost like he was groomed to play it safe so his parents could get rich when he made it. He's too safe, IMO. He hardly ever looks deep downfield and when he does, it's usually not thrown very well. He loves to throw the ball away and check down. I'm really not impressed thus far.

MM, I'll just say I'm gonna forget this game happened b/c it's hard to judge his work when he didn't have a legit receiver out there... Offensive play sequence (wasn't really playcalling b/c it's preseason) was horrible and so was blocking, he was under fire way too much... So, it's hard to make any judgements off this game, but from the way Clausen looked, his job is safe.

I fault him 100% but I like how the coaches let him earn it back. It was so dead in the stadium it was nice just to have some excitement.

I actually remember one of those plays where he could've got a nice gain but seemed to opt not to. I was "in" the chat but never really read anything. Just typed a bunch of gibberish during commercial breaks then left.

I was impressed, but I can't really say why. However, that interception he threw was just painful. He must really have not seen that defender. I think most of the issues you have with him have more to do with his inexperience than anything.

Yeah, I have no problem with attributing a lot of what he's doing to inexperience and most likely, no matter how poised he appears, things have to be moving super fast for him right now when he's out there. I may sound a lot more harsh than I intend to about guys, b/c if they're on our team, I want them to do well... But, the main point I meant to get out of that is that MM still looked better to me than Clausen despite how stagnant the offense was all night for both guys.

IDK how many drops there were when MM was out there. There were some for Clausen too, but I just really feel like Clausen is pre-determining who he's gonna throw it to before the snap and it's usually a quicker route. After the Ravens game I mentioned that to me, it looks like MM is more comfortable in letting a route develop and isn't scared to throw it to that spot, whereas Clausen doesn't seem to want to throw to a guy running a longer route and looks for the quick pass first... Hard to tell though... That's just my main issue with him. And I agree, the INT was definitely a 'wish I had that one back' moment, that kind of play can eat at you awhile.
