The Good The Bad and The Ugly: Jets Edition

The good (dfensively): Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen both had more passing yards individually than the entire trio of Jets QB. Sanchez was 5-10 for 12 yards, and the other guy managed to eek out 32.

But Moore and Clausen had two turnovers....Clausen's was an absolutely terrible throw....but yes, our defense did shine tonight....from the ones all the way to the threes....

Clausen's was an absolutely terrible throw....

He just completely missed the defender. I wouldn't say it was the worst ever. He had one earlier that I considered to be "Delhommey" (into double coverage with little chance for completion). I think that pass was just a rookie mistake.

Agreed the only reason it was acceptable was the fact that he is a rookie....

And the Jets would have had two turnovers as well if our secondary could catch. Gamble and Munnerlyn both dropped int's.

Not that I am criticising them, if they could catch, they would be wide receivers. :)

Sanchez was horrible tonight, worst qb on the field by far.

Yea Sanchez played terribly tonight compared to the way he finished 2009 and the first game against the Giants. I would say Gambles drop was the only one I was mad about. It was an easy interception. Munnerlyn's chance was above his head and off to the side if I remember. I was actually impressed he even had the chance to make a play on the ball in the first place....

But by the way the NFL has taken in Sanchez you would think he was the next Tom Brady or something.

His stats are not all that impressive and he has been lackluster every time I have watched him.

He really played well during the 2009 playoffs and he played well in the Giants game on Monday minus a tipped ball interception trying to force the ball to LT on third and long.

i'm loving the defense. i feel good about return coverage as well.

i'm not loving that offense at all, though. Oline was horrible. WRs are really bad. we can say that it looked bad because smith wasn't out there but they also didn't have the guy out there that could cover him and would be doing it all by himself (revis). until i see more reason for optimism in the next couple games i will have very little faith in what they can do and barely see it as an improvement over last years pathetic excuse for an offense with jake.

return coverage, as i said, was vastly improved over last year...or at least it looks that way. we still have the other half of that to improve and so far i'm not loving at all their ideas for returners...esp. on punt returns. edwards has to grow up quickly. is this too much pressure on the little fella? looking that way so far.

only preseason, i know, but still it's looking ugly.

He played ok in the playoffs last year. Had one bad game, one good one, and one so so game. But the Jets were still all about the run game and defense. I think they will find they will need more than that in order to get that shot at the Superbowl that everyone is claiming for them.

I was way more impressed by their run game than even the defense last year. Sanchez... well, I don't remember any details, so that can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your perspective.

He wasn't really asked to do all that much. He had several absolute meltdown games, Buffalo comes to mind but his play picked up to end the season. The jury is still out on him as far as I'm concerned. He has the ability to to be a great player. He has all the physical tools to be an elite QB, he just has to put it all together. Anyway, back on topic sorry to go on a rant about a former Trojan.....

One other good thing:

During last years preseason, all aspects of the team looked bad. And we still ended up 8-8. This year, at least the defense is looking good. The gives some hope that we will be better than last year.

The offense is missing their biggest playmaker, the guy that makes it all work. I don't think that can be stressed enough. Steve Smith makes it all happen, his ability to take it to the house on any play forces defenses to keep their safeties upfield. This allows the running game to get going forcing the safeties to cheat up in the box. Which allows Superman to get deep, rinse and repeat....

By no way am I trying to sugarcoat the lackluster play of the offense. They certainly have work to do, but to think the offense will look this bad with 79 and 89 on the field would be incorrect IMO....
