Living in San Diego, I must hear about the "big earthquake that is coming!" at least once a week. Seriously, it gets on my nerves. Of course a big earthquake is coming. We know how faults work and we know that a big earthquake is an eventuality, not a possibility. Saying that we are "due for the big one" is like saying that it's eventually going to rain. Well of course it is, we just don't know when. Saying that it's coming "sooner than expected" is just another attempt to get readers by drumming up fear; we have no clue when the "big one" is coming, so we can't really have a date to expect it by.
