Pike’s role shrinks, not optimism

you can spew all of your stats you want but you can't deny tony pike was a waste of a draft pick. i have thought about the pick for a while now and I still have zero grasp on why he chose him, it makes no sense.

I'll tell you why: Odds. They drafted 3 quarterbacks. Edwards is now a receiver but will be able to step in during extreme situations which negated the need to keep 4 QBs (I contend that was never an option unlike Gant who just figured it out today).

Then they drafted Clausen, who is the genuine article but left enough doubt about his character that they picked up Pike who was a proven winner in college but only a halfway decent quarterback. In my opinion, you add Clausen's contract and Pike's together and the Panthers ended up with a very safe backup to Moore this year for not a lot of money.

= Not a dumb pick.

Where does it end? When do you stop saying, "Well, if Moore fails and Clausen fails, and if Cantwell can't even be a decent No. 3, well we'd better take another quarterback" and instead start drafting players at positions of need?

Furthermore -- and this is what really kills me -- why did Fox draft only two quarterbacks during Delhomme's entire tenure, and yet we took two last year after Moore proved himself capable of starting?

Regarding Edwards, I liken him re: QB to a Tuma (sp?) the old kicker for the Jets that had to step in when Testeverde (the backup) went down late in the season. He threw a touchdown pass his first play from scrimmage... it was utterly brilliant.

Once again there are some people that liken Matt Moore to the next Tom Brady and Fox was clearly not one of them last April. He was taking out insurance policies in the draft, even to the point where he was trying to trade up to get Clausen. I am sure that was just their strategy for this draft, I don't think they are going to keep drafting quarterbacks if that is what you meant by saying "where does it end".

My opinon has been that with the drafting of Clausen, either Jimmy or Matt will be gone in the near future leaving a hole for backup QB.

In Pike they saw a young talnted QB who, with some work, could fill that role for years to come. Very similar to the Patriots drafting Matt Cassel in the seventh.

Im not sure how anybody can say its the worst pick, when its a sixth rounder.Chances are no matter who we got in the sixth round they wouldnt last that long.

I can understand insurance, which is why I was fine with the Clausen pick. As a Panthers fan, it's nice to have someone that could be your franchise quarterback in a year or two just in case Moore doesn't work out or we franchise and trade him next year.

Again, that's what killed me about this year's draft. The quarterback position was an afterthought for Fox and Co. for years, and then they take three quarterbacks in this year's draft, one of which they're going to turn into a receiver. I'm fine with having Armanti play receiver, but I bet he'd be a fine No. 4 quarterback who would probably never see the field. A quarterback stable of Moore, Clausen, Cantwell with Edwards as your emergency option sounds fine with me, and it would have left that sixth-round pick for us to do something else.

Its possible we could. But do you think he we be there all year without some team signing him??

A team would grap him based on the potential he has down the road.he has to better than Jordan Palmer with the bengals.lol

If they want to try it would just make matters worse if he had a good preseason showing. T

I don't get it. Everyone on this site complains about the QB situation. So what do the Panthers do, they go out and draft two excellent QB's in the draft. Now people are selling Pike down the road after throwing a couple passes in the pouring down rain. One of the passes was a bad drop.

The reality is a lot of 6th round picks never make the team. Some times you make great picks and some times you don't. There is no way to guarantee that every pick is going to be a starter, even the Patriots and Steelers can't do that.

All I am saying is let's give the guy more of a chance before we write him off. I bet he plays a good bit tomorrow. I was down in training camp last week and he got just as many reps as Cantwell. Cantwell to me looks like he has a sissy arm.
