Dog owner advice

I have two mutts...30-pounds apiece, both females. Got the three year old first, then the seven year old about two months after. They play fight constantly and have since the beginning. Every once in a while one would piss the other off and they'd suddenly shift into Cujo mode. After about six or seven seconds they'd stop, shake their heads and then back to normal.

Well now the younger one has suddenly become more aggressive. I'll go to bed and, as usual, they both jump up. Only now the younger one will block out the older one and if I make any move to pet the older one the younger one goes after her. I mean really goes after her.

Should I let them work it out? I got in between them last night and the younger one bit me for the first time (not intentionally, she was going for the other one).

I have smacked the poo out of her a couple of times. Stops the fight, but next time it's on all over again.

I think that the younger one is being rambunctious to the point of not being able to come back from the edge. You need to let her get to that edge and then bring her back to reality. Sooth her, "good girl" her, give her a treat, just do so before she goes into attack mode.
