Two Weeks

There's one thing about this whole situation that really bugs me more than anything else.

Mike Trgovac has never been a good defensive coordinator. He's been here for years, and every year, our defense has underachieved more often than not. I've never talked to a single person that likes his schemes.

Trgovac has never done anything good for this team, aside from coaching the defensive line. I'm sure we can all think of many times where Trgovac deserved to be fired, but hardly any where we all kind of stepped back and realized he has his moments. He doesn't have moments. He's awful.

No, this defense isn't as talented as it was in 2002 or 2003. However, it's definitely not the kind of defense that allows a team like Arizona, who's down one of their top playmakers, to come in and shred us with one guy.

If you asked anyone, with any shred of intelligence what Carolina needed to do defensively, they would have told you that the Panthers needed to pressure Warner, and cover Fitzgerald. Trgovac made no attempt to do either of these until the 2nd half. By then the game was out of reach.

My point is, you don't wait a couple weeks to make this move. This is the kind of situation where you tell said coach to have his desk cleaned out by Monday morning.

I agree, but it isn't Fox's usual MO.

There's a bit of a timing issue here if you want to target a guy like McDermott. Other teams are going to be looking at him whenever he comes available (depending on the fate of the Eagles).

Trgovac may go, but Trgovac's defense will stay because Trg's defense is Fox's defense.

I don't know if I buy that.

It might be true that Fox has a hand in it right now, but it was different when Del Rio ran it. Ideally speaking, that's what you want, a guy who can run the defense without the head coach having to be 'hands on' because he's got enough to do on his own.

That's one of the reasons I think a guy like McGinnis, someone Fox would be familiar with and could have a certain level of trust in, would be ideal. McDermott would be great philosophy-wise, but he'd have to build trust with Fox. Hopefully he could do that in the interview/camp process.

you don't fire a guy Monday morning ... that would be an emotional decision when you may not be thinking rationally. Let them go on vacation, take a week to think about all of the ramifications (including who you are going to get if you fire someone, and be sure that person is going to accept the job) and be sure you are honest with yourself and everything else before you fire someone from their job.

Agreed.

Then you fire him.
