Tuesday update: 25 down, one to go

One to go.

After wrapping up Tuesday's afternoon session, another humid self-baster, the Panthers have one practice left before camp ends, tomorrow at 9 a.m.

This one was like many of the others, fast-paced and physical, part of the by-product of having so many young players running around trying to win jobs.

Here's a few of the highlights:

-- A day after being promoted from the physically unable to perform list, WR Steve Smith wasn't dressed for practice. He was in shorts instead of full pads like his teammates, but still ran a few routes during individual drills.

-- SS Sherrod Martin was unable to finish practice with a groin strain. Coach John Fox had no other update on his condition.

This came after Martin made a great play on a deep ball to Dwayne Jarrett, streaking in at the last moment to break up the play.

Veteran Marcus Hudson replaced him with the starters. Hudson figures to be a mainstay on special teams, but also a factor on defense, as they've already discussed him in some of the hybrid roles Dante Wesley used to play.

-- WR Trent Guy had his hands on back-to-back touchdown passes, but only caught one of them.

The first was a blazer from QB Hunter Cantwell, that skidded off his fingertips and right to WR Oliver Young. On the next play, the defense lost Guy streaking across the back of the end zone, and he caught a much easier pass for the score.

-- Several nice plays by FS Charles Godfrey Tuesday, including a pick of a Matt Moore pass during two-minute work.

Godfrey's quietly emerged as a player, and provides the kind of athletic center fielder they need back there.

-- RB DeAngelo Williams was back after taking a few days for the birth of his child, and popped off a few nice runs in team drills to celebrate. We haven't talked much about Williams this camp, but that's mostly because he's such a steady, excellent player that he's nearly taken for granted.
