Panthers agree to 1-year deal with RB Rico Dowdle

What? This is the best RB class in a long time. If we let Dowdle on a 1 year deal  stop us from selecting a RB, we really are the worst drafting team out there. We have a lot of day 3 picks and there is no doubt there will be several RBs as BPA for a few of those.

Personally, I feel like we are throwing money away. That $6M covers a 4th/5th round RB’s 4 year rookie deal. I’d rather have Hubbard, Brooks and a 2025 rookies as our RB corps.

It just seems silly that we’re going to be paying our RBs $17M in 2025 and we won’t have our RB of the future playing at all.

Plus there are some very good RB's with returning ability too

Panthers signed Rico Dowdle to a one-year, $6.25 million contract.
The 6-foot, 215-pound Dowdle is a great fit for the Panthers’ backfield, capable of handling north-south rushing work, and even contributing in the passing game, while Chuba Hubbard takes a breather. The Panthers needed a reliable backup with 2024 second-round pick, Jonathon Brooks (knee), on the mend and Dowdle fits the bill.

Fantastic signing. I can’t believe some fools think signing a 1,000 yard rusher for 3 million is a bad move. “We can easily draft a guy in the 6th round that will be an all pro and rush for 1,500 yards on a deal that only pays 1 million!” Seems legit. This is great great great news and Bryce Young is thrilled to have two proven capable RB’s behind this line to depend on this season.

in a historically good rb draft we are signing vets for this?  Doesnt compute

The math doesn't really work on that.  If you need a RB, having a historically good RB draft gives you a better chance of getting one without reaching.  But it doesn't mean that you purposely go into a draft seeking that position.  We still want BPA, whatever position it is.  If we get BPA, but a bunch of the picks around it are RB, who cares?

Before this we had 0 behind Hubbard. Now we have a young explosive vet that had 1000 yards with a base of $3 mill for 1 year.

2025 is not a throwaway year. Theyre still trying to win and with a good draft they'll imo have a shot at the division.

We need a good running game and Hubbard can't carry it 500 times. A rookie would still be nice but you can't immediately bank on them as a 3 down rb if Hubbard goes down.

Plus Rico >>>>> miles

We have other problems to address, if you want to spend a late round pick on a return guy fine, but spending a 3rd or a 4th is pointless now

Except it’s literally not. Dowdle is on a 1 year deal and Brooks won’t play a down until 2026.

He also said day 3 pick which is likely where we’ll land on drafting one.

Care to name the other backs on our roster next year?

There are some on this board that think Rod Smart still plays here.

    • This is such an incrediblely stupid take. I'm one of the ones saying we need to have a better backup than Andy Dalton and it has nothing to do with any Bryce hate. Take away the names and look at capabilities of our current QB1 and QB2.  Did you not see what happened to Miami last year? Tua goes down and with 2 of the best WRs in football their juggernaut offense looks like preschool yard ball.  We need to be developing a 2nd QB if we're serious about a playoff run. Dalton showed he isn't good enough to get it done for multiple games. Now whether that means bringing in a different vet or actually trying to develop QB talent for once in franchise history, we need to be looking elsewhere to better the overall team.  Having a reliable backup is a good thing. DA wasn't great, but he was serviceable for a little bit if Cam got hurt. DC is supposed to be a QB whisper so let him whisper to 2 QBs and the team is in a better position. Injuries are part of football. You need to be as best prepared as you can be for the inevitable. I'd be making the same argument if we had Mahomes or Brady and not Bryce.
    • Looking at Scourtons tape he reminds me so much of Rucker
    • I really like this draft, not really a reach or bad pick at all in the bunch. I can see every single player drafted making an impact this season with 3 definite starters and Evans that should get a ton of snaps at TE2.   NALO has all the skills and size you look for in a WR1 and should make an immediate impact on offense. Horn will return punts as a rookie and learn a lot techniques from AT.  Scourton has the size, skills and intensity to be a day 1 starter at Strong side OLB and make a noticeable impact for the defense.  Princely will see snaps but will take a little longer than Scourton to become a starter. Needs to add functional weight and strength to his frame to be a 3 down starter.  Will break down further after my head scans.
