Smith activated from PUP

Slowly but surely, the Panthers are beginning to look whole again.

WR Steve Smith was activated from the physically unable to perform list, and ran a few routes during individual drills this morning.

That's not to say he's going to take any contact soon, as they want to make sure that broken left arm is ready for the regular season opener. Panthers coach John Fox said he wasn't even compelled to play Smith in the preseason, since the goal is to have him in New York on Sept. 12.

RB Mike Goodson was also back on the field this morning, his first action in nearly two weeks after an ankle sprain.

RB Deangelo Williams will be returning to camp tomorrow after missing a few days for excused personal reasons.

Rookie G Ray Histake (neck) was added to the injury list, but the Panthers had 72 players on the field Monday morning, a strong showing for this point in camp.

-- RB Jonathan Stewart took part in individual drills for the fourth straight practice, which may be the first time since he's been a Panther when that was true.

-- WR Charly Martin came out to practice without his large, club-like cast on his left hand, but halfway through the morning work, it was back. He's not quite ready to catch passes, and it has to be killing him to not be out there competing for a job.

-- C Andrew Crummey got through the day cleanly, with no apparent bad snaps. Good for him. He needed a break after yesterday's torture chamber.

-- The Panthers will go through a lighter practice this afternoon, before getting a break for family day. It's a little late in camp (since they break Wednesday), but guys are always relieved to see their wives and kids down here.

The practice will be held in Gibbs Stadium again, as recent rains have left their other fields too soggy.

I'm still going to post about it in this thread though, because I know it will absolutely drive dpantherman crazy if this thread gets 120 posts and his gets knocked off the front page. He will be enraged like nothing we've seen before. I'm thinking Virginia Tech meets Columbine High School.

Smith took part in only non-contact drills without defensive backs at the beginning of Monday's workout, during which he wore a baseball cap. But Smith looked sharp running routes and made a leaping grab of Matt Moore's high pass.

Smith later caught light passes off to the side from backup QB Jimmy Clausen in his most extensive work since he broke his forearm playing flag football in June.

Hmmmm...working on that rapport already?
