Per Yasinskas: Quarterback Competition?

From the NFC South Blog:

As we look back on the first round of preseason games and think about what’s happened so far in camps, here are five random thoughts on the NFC South.

My initial take on the Carolina quarterbacks was that Matt Moore looked average the other night and Jimmy Clausen looked pretty good. The vibe I’m getting out of Carolina right now is the Panthers think Clausen looked even better than I thought. This might be a little more competitive a situation than originally thought.

Yas is an idiot. Yas is the guy who went on and on and on and on.....telling everyone we didn't want to see Matt Moore replace Jake no matter how bad it was.

All these guys have there own bias when they write. There ain't no QB competition in Carolina. At least not for the starting job heading into the season.

If the Panthers are hyping Clausen even more than most folks thought or might be reasonable at this point, it reinforces the whole idea that they plan to make Clausen the quarterback of the future no matter what Moore does. If Richardson is going down the cheap route and they know 2 things:

1. that they are going to let Moore go at the end of this year anyway

2. Fox is going to be gone too so this is a rebuilding year

Then it makes sense to play Clausen no matter who is the better guy. And you would put him in there no matter who gives you the best chance to win.

If Clausen gets work with the 1s this week you have to consider that they are looking down the road and have already decided who their quarterback will be next year and are grooming him now despite what happens with Moore.

they didn't pay Clausen the type money where he needs to see the field soon. Richardson is only going cheap this year.....after the lockoout does or doesn't occur he will be back to his olds ways. Plus, his new coach and the system he runs will dictate who the QB will be.

Fox is gonna go with the guy who will win games in 2010. His concerns about his future and wallet will make sure of that.

    • Team is dangerous right now, all four lines are contributing and the speed at which the guys play at is tremendous.
    • And every nfl player wannabe tries to up their draft position through things like the combine and theyre all basically lying though those drills theyve practiced hundreds of times that have little bearing on if theyre a good football player. The pro days are even worse. All you have to do is dupe 1 team. Is it right? No. But until teams put more emphasis on college tape vs. What they did in shorts with no defense it'll happen every year. I doubt there is a single player that wouldn't try anything to up their draft prospects.  Young had years of tape and that shouldve been what the decision was based on. Not a scale and throwing in shorts.  ( btw I think the combine and pro days are 90% a waste of time) Young has it financially made already. It's up to him if he wants to be a good football player too. I think the benching was the best thing that could've happened to him. It remains to be seen if it was enough
    • This.  Honest introspection on his behalf would have seen that size and strength were his biggest weaknesses. He looks no different. With the programs in the NFL, he could have come back to camp 10 lbs of muscle heavier. Easily. If had done so, it would have been reported on. It would have been the hottest story…. But we never saw anything of the sort, so it probably never happened.  He showed improvement this last game, likely from Andy’s tutelage. He has to show something VERY special to close the season out to change my thinking on him… like 4 game winning streak with a clutch 4th quarter comeback. Then maybe.
