Shefter optimistic about Carolina; Clausen

I have to think that if we get MUUUUCH better QB play that Fox wouldn't appear to be so conservative as in years past.. if we find a 2nd, or even 3rd, WR.. 3rd downs wouldn't be so hard to come by...

Fox would be looked at as a much better coach if he could just get those 2 positions figured out...

this may sound obvious, but it also seems ignored or forgotten.. which coincidentally can be said about Fox and those positions.. :)

this is his first coaching tenure.. as with all of us, we grow and learn.. granted it's been 8 years or so.. but I don't think you learn everything in just 4 or 5 years.. more like 8-12 years you truly start to master your craft.. (or never figure it out)

if he fails to deliver on the WR, then he needs gone. if he can just get that to work, then he'll prove to have been worth keeping around.. we won't know, whether he stay in Carolina or elsewhere, these answers until time passes..

with how hard it is to draft quality QBs and WRs, I don't think it's fair to look at that black and white.. paradoxically, he either has to get it done or go...

we as fans fail to give enough credit to how hard this game is and how competitive the NFL is.. this is why you sit at home making minimal money compared to these guys.. You're not as smart as they are.

Success at this level lies in the small, fine tuning of your team. there are too many moving parts, and competition, to make drastic changes and expect anything other than failure..

This is why I don't think you figure it all out in just 4 or 5 years...

Its simple, Go look at how many WINNING seasons Fox has; not .500 or right below but WINNING! You will see it isn't as great as some people on these boards make it seems...especially with the talent this team has fielded under him. And yes there have been injuries but there are injuries with every team good coaches develop talent...its obvious Fox's squad of coaches fail at QB development and WR development! Now, go look at Bill's overall body of work, i think he missed the playoffs like 4 years TOTAL...he didn't settle for .500 seasons, he wins...with injuries!

Say what you like about the people around him, scouting or whatever...head coach pics his team of personell; are you saying Bill is smart and surrounds himself with smart people? Sounds good to me, bring it on!

I was trying not to be biased about Cowher. My father is a life-long Steelers fan and loved Cowher. I wanted him to coach the Jaguars but my ownership liked to keep around Del Rio and Garrard longer than they should. The only other team in the NFL I like is the Panthers so I am hoping they bring him in if Fox doesn't stay but I don't want to get my hopes up.

As I said in Zod's thread about JR's strategy, I've come around on Fox even with all the heat he takes for being conservative. For all his faults, the guy is a good coach and a good guy, and I'll really be pissed if JR just lets him walk... I don't want to go through another 'dark ages' with starting players like Jeff Lewis, Richard Huntley, and Lester Towns.

Balogna!

Everybody who knows football, knows that Cowher is a winner. Look at his whole body of work. Go ahead and open up the delicatessen.

Bullshit....LeBeau's defense and the Steelers scouts/organziation are the reason for their consistent success.

The Steelers have not missed a single beat since Cowher has left....actually , you could make a strong case that they have been more successful.

Cowher won division titles in a historically weak AFC North Division...Cinn, Cleveland, and Baltimore sucked consistently in the past.

He lost big game after big game....on his own field.

People are confusing a great coach with a great scheme and organziation.

Cowher is by no means a bad coach. He is just not the savior that people want to believe.

Also, history has consistently proven that retread coaches are not successful with their new teams.

I'm tired of douchebags on here dissing Clausen because he could potentially unseat their savior Moore. Damn. They're on the same team. You can like both. Whoever said Clausen looked like a deer in headlights, get your eyes checked.

my dissing of clausen has nothing to do with his football playing ability. i support him as a panther. my dissing of him has more to do with him being funny lookin'. i mean seriously... the kid looks goofy. it's no different from crackin on the offensive linemen and calling them the big uglies.

Fox has never had more than 9 losses in a season. JR is not a stupid man and knows exactly what kind of "budget team" Fox and Hurney are working with. IMHO, Fox is gone if we have 10 or more losses, signed to something short if we hover around .500, and signed to 3+ years if we actually make some noise this season.

That's fair game.
