Panthers bring in LB help

Running short on linebackers, the Panthers brought one in Saturday afternoon, signing Nic Harris. He was a fifth-round pick by Buffalo last year, but was waived after failing a physical because of a knee injury suffered last December.

Of course, he was also a poor fit for Buffalo's new 3-4 defense. The converted safety from Oklahoma had to bulk up to play linebacker anyway, and wasn't stout enough to play in the Bills new scheme. The 6-foot-2, 232-pounder was the 147th overall pick last year.

To make room for him on the roster, they waived-injured center Steve Justice, who played Thursday but was held out of practice Saturday morning with what was termed a back injury.

The Panthers were down to six linebackers for the morning practice because of injuries to Quinton Culberson (thigh bruise) and Jamar Williams (shoulder).

The only healthy backups for the morning session were rookies Eric Norwood and Sean Ware and former practice-squader Mortty Ivy.

That makes him the right type for a Ron Meeks weak side backer.
